Passionately selling out

I have a few friends who listen to the mainstream music. My fiance, I, and his nephew and his nephew's girlfriend actually had a debate about it. My fiance and I are against MOST not all, but most mainstream music. And here is his nephew and his girlfriends thoughts.
They see these people like Soulja boy sucessful because he makes a lot of money. And so therefore that makes him a smart guy-again, just because he has more money than they will ever see. It doesn't matter if they're passionate or talented with what they are doing. Just as long as the albums are sold and people are coming to their concerts, idolizing these people. So that's the gist of how they see it.
How my fiance and I see it is:
For one they are just sell outs. They are not truly passionate about what they are doing, a lot of them are souly in it for the money and nothing more. Example: Soulja Boy (sorry if I spelt it wrong). It disgusts both of us. Money doesn't make someone smart. Seriously-any dummy could write empty songs and meaningless lyrics. This does not make someone truly successful! If you are not passionate about what you do (and you can always tell if someone is), and taking y our talent as far as you can take it, then you are not are not truly successful at life. Money doesn't equal success. Money is just another tool that human's made for survival. That was an obvious one I know. He is just another trashy guy with a lot of money, who is idolized for only God would know why, considering he doesn't really write about anything, and pretty soon his name wont even be heard of, but maybe every once in a great while.

PS: I can't stand followers. People like that drive me nuts. It's okay to like the samething, but when you do it just because it's played on the radio all the time, or you hear someone else saying that it's the radest thing ever, does not mean you have to like, or be like that.

The music nowadays, and not just "Soulja Boy" is out of control. What ever happened to meaningful music??? There was a day when that was around. I prefer to listen to music that has a point and a plot behind it. What are we really subjecting our kids and ourselves to? A bunch of crap music. But all we can really do is change the station and move on to something better.

Soulja boy is just an example! I agree, what is this world coming too!!! So many problems just in music and media alone!!! But I agree, all you can really do is avoid the sell outs. I wish I could do more.

I think you are absolutly right! Success is not measured by the amount of money you have and the amount of money you have definitly does not measure your intelligence. Let's pause and reflect on some not so smart wealthy Americans, Paris Hilton, Jamie Lynn Spears, Ryan Seacrest, I think you get my point. But back to the music... I think your a way more successful musician if you can tour the country three times a year and sell out most of your shows and hardly have your songs played on the radio.. I'm reffering to bands like Widespread Panic and the late Phish.. These bands have sold their own music they originally had no label and are not radio broadcasted.. XM stations excluded.. They have a true folloing and when they don't feel the passion for the music they end it..exhibit 1: Phish.

All I'm saying is that just beause you have the most played song on the radio.. doesn't mean you play, well I shouldn't use play, how about make, make good music..

Just hearing her name makes me cring!!!!!! Uh Gosh....I've never heard of those bands, but i do listen to a lot of underground music, that actually has meaning! I don't understand why these people are idolized? Why are they even mentioned on the media? seriously! Take away their money and they're just seen as another trashy person, that does no good for our young people!
I don't even turn on the radio anymore because the music is soo lousy! But when I was still listening to the radio I was constently turning the stations back and forth. I wonder why? Maybe it's because most of the music is crap!
