My last news topic goes out to all the animal lovers. Seems like these kinds of problems never really go away.
Demand for ivory threatens elephant survival - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17353203/from/RS.4/
So here's the story. We know that elephants have been poached for ivory for YEARS. And we know it's been killing these big animals off. But, people like the ivory, especially in Japan and China. So, poor people who want to make money...they see this big elephant, and they know..."Hey, if I kill this thing and sell the tusks, I could eat dinner every night." And now elephant survival is struggling.
Alright. Alright. I know. It's an old topic. We know it's wrong to kill the elephants. It's been made illegal and all that jazz. So what the heck am I possibly going to say about this?
Science...where are you? Why can't we figure out another way to get the ivory without killing the elephants? Isn't there a way we can somehow clone it or something?
Oh wait...cloning is too controversial.
Snap, I guess that just means we'll have to deal with these poachers and keep trying to breed little elephants and release them into the wild.
So now what? We still have a problem. I know an elephant is a HUGE animal, so it's kinda difficult to get these tusks without killing one of these things. That and the elephant really needs to use thier tusks throughout their daily life.
What to do? We've already tried to tell people to only get tusks from elephants that had died naturally and that obviously isn't working.
However, I am not a genius and no do I constantly spend my time thinking of how to get ivory without killing elephants. But isn't there someone out there who is smart enough or knows elephants well enough to figure out a way to do so? Or maybe that's the reason why we still have the problem...because we can't think of one.
We can go to the moon, but we can't figure out a way to save elephants or some other endangered animals. What the heck is wrong with us?
I also think we should learn how to take care of our own planet before we start galavanting off looking for life on others. If there is life, it's doing a darn good job at keeping hidden. Maybe there's a reason for that. Maybe they see what we've been doing to our elephants!
