Just a quick update from the Service for Leadership Conference at the College of San Mateo.  We are blogging live during a workshop on blogging and new media, to demonstrate the power of new media and some of the practical aspects of "how to do it."

I will attach the slides I used for the presentation later today.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I took your advice and took the political comapss test. As I suspected I am one step to the left and at an equilibrium between libertarian and authoritarian. I am not quite sure what that makes me, so I think I am going to stick with Liberal Republican. :) It suits me. Another issue I am conservative on is same sex marriage. One that I am semi-liberal on is the government's authority to use surviellance on citizens. I believe it is illegeal is some cases, but I do beleive it is keeping Americans safe from terrorism. Also, that the only people who need to be worried are those who have something to hide.

I hope to engage in further political discussions with you, whether I come to find we are like minded or not.

Debatechick,

Your theory that you "have nothing to be worried about if you have nothing to hide" is false. Here's why. First, you could be caught by saying one simple word. Only ONE word can get you investigated and spied on. Let's say you're looking up information on google on death or dying. Maybe those are words like "death" that would put you into their "net" and then they would decide you might be making an incidious death thread or you may be threatening someone. So they're going to spy on your phone calls and your emails. YET...you may be innocent. Nonetheless, they're going to take every email that came to you and that you sent out and every call into your home and that you made out of your home and they're going to listen in on that too. AND they'll listen to everyone who calls you and emails you and visa versa. It's called a dragnet.

All because you decided to google the words death or dying. Maybe you looked up that term because your grandma just died and you want to find places to help you deal with death and dying of loved ones. But WHAM there you are and all your friends and strangers are CAUGHT in the dragnet.

Now, the other side of this coin is that peace activists and passifists and vegetarians and DEMOCRATS have been spied upon. Why? Merely because they dissented with the powers-that-be.

Please think twice before you think that the very laws that protect us from warrantless spying haven't been violated. Bush and his administration has 72 hours to immediately begin a wiretap and to show 2 simple things on WHY it's needed: 1. NAME 2. REASON

Now, the reason Bush went around it is because the requests were being turned down. Why? Because he was either giving them NO NAMES or NO REASONS!

SImple as that. No names no warrant. No reasons No warrant. What he did was illegal. He broke the law and he promises he will continue to break the law. AND No...you're not safer!

First of all, the government, even the Bush adminstration has better things to do then wiretap everyone who looks up death on the internet. If your claim held water, everyone in the United States would be wiretapped for some reason or another. Plus, in most cases, the government cannot even read our emails. That is not want their surveillance system is set up to do unless you are a huge threat. All it does is see your user information and who you email to and their user information.

Not to mention, "you have nothing to worry about" still stands. What I meant by this comment was not that you couldnt/wouldnt be watched by the government, but that is you are a law abiding citizen then there is no reason you should be scared they are watching you, because you have nothing to hide. And personally, I would rather make a type 2 error than a type one ( or maybe I have that backwards?). I would rather find 9 innocent people to catch one terrorist because it only takes one terrorist to casue mass destruction and death (I read that better put in a piece of debate evidence I have floating around...I just need to go through all of my old stuff and find everything I need to back up most of my claims on this site...)

Even though I disagree with you, I am glad to see people with their own mind who are leaders rather than followers who believe everything they are told and do not question authority. Thanks for your commentary.

Sound like a great forum. Wish I Were There.
