The Search for Summer Jobs

Tagged:  •    •

It's that time of the year again-summer. Remember back in the day when summer meant waking up early to run around with your friends? Or going to the pool all day? Not anymore. For us, summer is a time to work and save money for college, with very little free time.
I read rachael_alexi's blog "change the age," which was her attempt to get a summer job. There a few reasons why it's difficult to get one.
For one, if you're too young, may places won't hire. It's true-age matters. Yes, it's unfair that you're friends, who are only a few months older than you, have jobs because according to adults they're old enough and more mature than you. Here's an idea: ask your relatives (i.e. grandma) if you can help clean her house once a week. Or ask your parents for allowance for working in the yard, doing the laundary (not just yours!), folding, and maybe making dinner once in a while.
For me, age has always been an issue, since I'm so young for my class. My birthday is in August, so I was unable to get a summer job. The job I am at now does hire younger workers. I'm a waitress at an assisted living home.
Another reason you might not get a summer job is because you started looking too late. You don't look for a summer job when you get out of school; you have to look before. For one, you need to get work papers, so by starting earlier you can get them signed at your school. The second and most important reason is, because college students get out of school almost a month before high schools. They tend to go back to their old jobs and that's when positions start getting filled.
So what to do?
There's always retail-Walmart or Hallmark. Or fast food or restaurants-BK, McDonalds, Friendlys, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks. There's assisted living homes, camps...
Use your imagination.

Now these days it used to be easy to get a summer job. But the way the economy is now, it is even harder to find a job during the wiinter, spring and fall time. The unemployment rate is rising with the high taxes. Good luck with your job.
