Religion in Goverment

Religion is an important and essential part of life to the majority of Americans. Although personally atheist, I understand and respect the views of all religions; yet still, I feel church and state should be separated. Religion, for some, is whom they are and what they are- to take that expression away from politicians is unjust. Taking this into consideration, politicians should be aloud to express the phrase 'god' and their views on life and philosophy in a general way, but this should not implement itself upon legislations.

Though a politician believes through his/her religion that abortion is unjust, or to the extreme- murder, it is still the politicians responsibility to realize that abortion is a personal decision and government interference should not be aloud. The same ideology should exist for gay marriage and other issues of the sort.

This expression of discomfort came about from watching the Faith and Values ‘debate’ on CNN. In this time of economic, domestic, and crisis abroad, we should not be focusing on something, which should not even have an effect on our government. We should be discussing issues of substance. Religion has no place, or rather should have not place in the way our elected officials conduct business and pass legislation.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." -1st amendment of the constitution
