I saw on the news earlier today that there is a movement that is trying to get the National Anthem to be sung in Spanish as well as English at public events. Now I think this is a little extreme. I know how hard it can be to learn a foreign language (I've studied both Spanish and Japanese), but if someone is to become a US citizen they should at least know the National Anthem in English. Translations can help people learn the English version better, and it can be fun to have the anthem sung in different languages at different events, but requiring it to be sung in Spanish is a little ridiculous. If I was to try and become a citizen in another country, I would try my hardest to learn the language, and besides learning all the basics that help me get around, I'd like to learn their national anthem in the national language.

No one is requiring that the anthem be sung in spanish. The Star Spangled Banner was translated as a way to encourage immigrant solidarity in a time of uncertainty.
In addition, as it was posted earlier on this site, Bush actually sang the national anthem in spanish on the campaign trail (1999) in mostly hispanic communities. So even W's remark that the anthem should only be sung in english can be disgarded due to his neglectful memory.

The news that I saw showed people who wanted it to be required to be sung at public events. And yes, that is a bit hypocritical of Bush to say that when he sung the national anthem hisself in Spanish.
Really?? I hadn't heard of that. Why does it need to be required? It seems from campaign trails to inaugural ceremonies -- it is sung in spanish. The national languague is English and, though it is great to have our anthem sung in other languages, should be the only "required" language.
im with you... not only do people from other countries come to america and live here never attempt to learn the language which the least they could do is try.. now they want to sing the AMERICAN anthem in spanish... what the hell... thats a tad overboard
I don't mind them sing it in Spanish, but they should also need know how to say it in English. Because they are in this country and need to be able to communicate with us as while. if we were to go to Mexico and stay we would need to learn how to speak spanish so I believe since they are over here they need to speak english.
Just a little more information... the group who originally suggested that the National Anthem be translated and sung in Spanish was not actually a group of "Latinos/Hispanics" but rather a "Latino" interest group... and from the Latinos that I have spoken with since the announcement they believe its a bad idea and really would appreciate if people would stop speaking "for" them.
