A Home Away From Home

I am a Houstonian to the core; I love Houston and everything it has to offer. I have come to Baton Rouge to make a name for myself, and get educated. I came to Southern University for the facility, nurturing of the faculty, and my family history. I came to Southern University because, I want to succeed and I want you to know why.
Southern University is known for three major schools; Business, Mass Communications, and Law. I intend to take advantage of two of the three. Accounting is Business, and Television and Broadcasting in Mass Communications. These schools are ranked and spoken about across the country. From newspapers to online; current and former students rave about the programs.
Southern University is a Historically Black University. Both my parents attended school and graduated from prestigious white universities. They always talk about what was missing from their education; the mentoring was not existent in the universities they attended. Compared to their black counterparts; mentoring, and overall want for you to succeed is there. I also, believe I will receive different treatment from professors about certain controversial issues that wouldn’t even be mention in a white institution. I will have more freedom to express my uncensored views of the world from my own perspective; and others can relate to it.
Southern University and I have family history. There was almost an instant connection to the past when you follow in someone’s footsteps. I feel as though I am following my grandfather’s stride for education. I feel a connection to him as I walk down the same halls. Because, I don’t have the financial boundaries he had, I believe I have no reason not to graduate at the top of my class. My family is proud to see me making this leap towards education, and I am proud to be here.
Once again, I am a Houstonian to the core but, making Baton Rouge my home. Southern University’s excellent standards, policies, and personal connection have all drawn me here. Only my will, determination, perseverance, and faith can keep me here. I came to Southern University for the facility, nurturing of the faculty, and my family history. I have been inspired to attend and graduate from Southern University for these reasons.
