FREE TO BE ME

Why is it that when we voice our opinions as individuals about our lives, careers, families, friends, and other personal situations that influance who we are, do people think that our 1st ammendmant right to freedom of speach should be evoked? "Notes from the Mothership" is a book written by Adrienne Zurub, who writes about her life as a nurse at one of the major health care systems in Ohio, her family, poetry , and her entry into standup comedy. The self-published author was fired 2 weeks after the release of her book " Notes from the Mothership". We have a right to voice our opinons without having to fear retribution by our employers or anyone else for that matter. "Is Freedom of speach a falacy or reality? "They told me I was fired because of the book . . . after 26 years of stellar employment," Zurub, said in an interview. "The two administrators who fired me admitted to me they did not even read my book." But they said they had seen excerpts. And that was enough. Enough to get her fired after 26 years of dedicated service. Was it fair? NO! When does freedom of speach not become free any more? Clearly she paid a costly price in persuit of her quest to become an accomplished author(An American Dream). Sure we think we can say what ever it is that we feel. What comes up, comes out so to speak. Most feel that we should be protected because of our constitutional rights. But who decides what is constitional or not? I believe that we all make an impact on others by the words that we speak, and the deads that we perform daily. Be it wrong, right, or indifferent it is our right to speak what we feel if that is what we choose to do? What messages are we sending to the public, our children, and the nation. Do what I say, when I say it, and for how long I say it to be done and while you are doing it don't say anything. What ever happend to leading by example, virtue, and self expression. We mask who we are and what we feel to fit into the workplace, home, and other areas of our lives, while trying to please everyone around you. Masking at times what we realy feel, or would like to say for fear of retribution or hurting someones feelings. Puttiing on the face for that moment, the face of a happy compliant worker, for fear of loosing our jobs; the face of a happy husband or wife to keep our family together. The face of a happy well rounded individual when we are realy dying inside. Caged in category of who and what others think we should be. When all we realy want is to be free to be just who we are.

You are such a strong writer and have such a strong voice. I think it takes a person a really long time in order to find who they really are inside and be proud of it. To find your own sence of self is probably the hardest struggle people go through in their lives.

I definitely agree with you. Things are just getting out of hand. What ever happened to freedom of speech? If this amendment is upheld then things like this poor woman would not be fired for speaking her mind. We are all different, no one is a like or thinks exactly a like, and yet we are taught to be the same. If it gets any worse, I'm moving out of the country once i get my college education and can afford it! Which I will be able to within the next 2 years.
