I love cats and all, but I have recently discovered that they have secret powers. First off, I don't think the cuteness powers and negativity melting lasers that kittens possess are given enough credit. They are just so cute, who wouldn't want a kitten? Any bitter, crusty feelings we have about the World can melt away after a few moments of playing with a kitten. They rescue us from the dark spots in our days. Ok, with that said, if you haven't barfed yet, you must know that my cat, Howie, has become a foster parent. I didn't know it, but my adult male cat has all the skills to love and care for tiny kittens he has never met. What can I say for humans? Are we too jaded? What is it about animals that they can be so open and responsible? What do they have that we don't have? I'm not quite sure, but Howie has certainly come to the rescue.
We just got three tiny kittens that a friend had found abandoned in the street. When Howie saw them, he just stared and sniffed at first. Curiosity moved into playful wrestling and now the progression has lead to lots of licking, cuddling and lessons about proper litter box use. Howie comes over to the box after the kittens are finished and still inside and pushes the litter to cover up their little presents. He's just been so loving and selfless that it has left me in awe. It's even made him more loving to me. He hasn't bit my feet in days, which could just be because he has the kittens to nibble on, but he's a whole new cat. He's progressive. He's older and white while the kittens are five weeks old and black and brown. Howie is both color blind and age blind. He has no bs holding him back from becoming exactly what these abandoned kittens need right now.
I only hope I can do the same for abandoned children. My cat has now given me a powerful example to hold onto though.

Sadly, my cat would be a terrible parent. He's a bad example. His nickname is Only Bad, because he is.
You will be a great mama cat! I'm so excited for you!

Okay...here is my "magic kitten" story. For many years, I was (and still am, really) a reptile enthusiast. I owned several snakes, a chameleon and a bearded lizard. The prize of my scaly pets was a seven-foot columbian red-tailed boa named "Scarlet." Well, one day, I was off at the pet store buying Scarlet's weekly dinner...a large rat. On this particular day, the store owner had a box full of "free kittens" sitting right next to the large rat cage. Then, it hit me...large rats and free kittens are exactly the same size, but large rats cost $5.95, and free kittens were...well, free. So, I happily "adopted" a darling little tabby and took it home, fully intending to throw it into the tank with Scarlet, and thoroughly happy with myself for saving six bucks. I was just about to toss the little sucker to its doom, when it looked at me and said, "meow." Dang it all! So, we named the kitten "Snake Food," and I went back to the store to pick up another large rat.
Dumb kittens and their "magical powers"...grumble, grumble...

My brother was considering getting a large pet snake, one that would require being fed live mice/rats. We went to the store to scope it out, and my sister threw a fit about live animals being fed to snakes, so instead of coming home with an anaconda, we got a white mouse instead. My brother was less than happy but eventually realized that if he'd gotten a snake he would have put up with my sister's endless whining about animal cruelty. So everyone was happy...until the mouse escaped....
I LOVE that story.
I love snakes... but I'm the type of person that has to buy the frozen mice and poke them with a stick so the snake thinks it's alive. I don't have the heart to watch something die in front of me. I'm a big softie, lol.
The magical power of kittens is shown in your story.

Muahaha.

Now this is what I'm talking about! One little meow and a look into their tiny eyes and everything else melts away. I fully believe that doctors should prescribe more time with kittens and less antidepressants.

...cats rule the world...
THink about it. If they have this much power when they're so young, think how their powers must grow as they do!
Cats totally rule the world...they just don't want us to know it...

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.
Of a cat person but I can see where you are coming from. I have 3 cats and they all are brother and sister. The good thing about them is that their father died a few years ago and he was my favorite. He was an outside cat but was very sweet. He protected the house. He also had 9 lives. He was poisoned, ran over twice, beat by a neighbor, had an rotting tooth that made his mouth swell up, and came home from many fights by the cat next door. He was my favorite cat. He lived for almost 16-17 years and that is long for a cat. I sat outside with him while he was getting ready to pass away. I guess kittens are amazing...

Love comments? I do too!
I'm more of a puppy person myself. They have more of a draw over me than kittens, because they're less likely to scratch me with those sharp little claws of theirs.

You've never met my puppies...
They have some dangerous nails on their paws!
Of course...they're relatively larger breeds, so...that might have something to do with it. My rotty-shepherd is less than a year old, and she's the biggest of the bunch!
And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.
I have a rottie that weighs nearly 100 pounds, and she was the runt of her litter. I'd still rather deal with her nails than those of the cats next door. Hers don't usually puncture the skin... just hurt, and they're usually only used when she a) wants something and is pawing at you or b) steps on you and scratches you in the process.

He weighs about 150 pounds. His sister weighs around 100. The owners said they would only get around 50-100 lbs but boy were they wrong.
I agree about the scratching. Dogs can't give you Cat scratch fever either so that is a good thing.

I just have all the luck with dogs, it seems. Despite my severe allergy to cat screatches, I'd still rather face my cat. My dogs nails have drawn blood, and it hurts a lot longer than a scratch from my cat, counting the sweeling and itching and everything.

I knew they were out to get me....

but all the local cats run to me to pet them when I walk down the street. I think they've communicated among themselves that I like cats, 'cuze they run up to me with tails up, expecting lovin' And that is what I love about cats, they are fearless, they have no problem approaching strangers, especially if they want to be pet, they lead their own secret lives we don't know about or understand. My animal-fanatic friend Sharah says cats have secret doors to "cat universes" that they go off to from time to time (you know how your cat disappears sometimes and you can't find them anywhere...she says they are in a "cat universe.") I half believe it; the Pharaohs thought cats had special powers and I tend to agree.

I guess you can teach an old dog (or cat!) new tricks. I enjoy the company of my cat Kiri who I recently adopted from a humane shelter. She was rescued from an abusive home and was very skeptical when she first came into my house. But now she is an entirely different animal. She follows me around to ask for petting, and even though she still is a true "I am queen of the world" type of cat at heart, she shows that she loves me (she's especially affectionate after I've been gone a few days).
Any pet, whether it be feline or not, is great because they exponentially increase the amount of love you give and receive. Pets are silent friends who can comfort you on a bad day, be a playmate, or simply keep you company if you're feeling lonely.
Yay pets!! :-)
