On Early morning Sunday, the residence of Hawaii, our 50th state suffered from a massive earthquake. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.6. The earthquake affected all of Maui and 99% of the Big Island. The quake and its aftershocks caused structural damage to buildings, but there were no reports of fatalities. The aftershock was casued seven minutes later, measuring 5.8 struck 145 miles southeast of Honolulu from a depth of nearly 12 miles. During the next seven hours, 53 aftershocks reverberated in the state, though none of them with a magnitude exceeding 4.4, the USGS said.

Across the state, residents reported little panic, and for some the loss of power meant it was time to sit outside, set up barbecues and talk with friends and neighbors, according to an Associated Press report.

United Airlines canceled 11 flights to and from Hawaii on Sunday, airline spokesman Brandon Borrman said.

Why did I blog about this? Because this is one of the effects of Global Warming. We do not exactly understand how Global Warming is working, and very few people are fighting for our environments. It is funny how almost everyblog in this website is the right of a certain race, or a certain life-style, or certain things in life. Yet, we do not seem to worry about the effects of Global Warming on Earth. Do you not realize how soon the end will come????

What do you think?

Did you take an Earth Science class in middleschool? Hawaii was formed by volcanoes vocanoes are formed by techtonic plates that are shoved up against each other, the moving of techtonic plates causes earthquakes, thats just how it is it has nothing to do with warming the plates are going to shift on their own

Yes, I have!!! Global Warming causes the water level to rise, also may make a shift in the tactonic plate, which than causes the earthquake. I do know what I am talking about!!!

Actually the scientists are wrong in this case. They have found another theory. Because the islands are actually volcanoes, yes they are, they are formed from volcanoes. They believe that these volcanoes are getting larger underwater, which may have caused the earthquake. I will read it again and post it.

I agree with Waverly Person, a geophysicist with the USGS. ( http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_a/hawaii-assesses-damage-from-earthqu... ) He thinks it was caused by a build up of smaller volcanic earthquakes that the island has had. Global warming may or may not have an effect on earthquakes, but I do not think it was the cause of this one. It will take time to see all of the effects that global warming is causing, nothing will be immediate....if anything at all.

We should all be scared of Global Warming. After the glaciers killed off the dinosaurs and covered 2/3 of the earth, Global Warning started and melted them back into the arctic. (hmmm, how many humans did it take to start that process?) If nature is cyclical, we need to look ahead to when the glaciers return and everyone on the North American continent will be living in igloos or in Mexico.
