Victim of Racial Discrimination

Tagged:  •    •

I know a lot of people do not think it is possible for Caucasians to be discriminated against, well I am here to say that those people are wrong. I am a Caucasian and I have been discriminated against. I know that in some places in America people deal with racism and discrimination everyday, and I am glad that I don’t face those challenges, but it is possible for Caucasians to be discriminated against.

When I was in 4th or 5th grade I went to get a haircut, a simple process, no big deal. So at this place when you came in you signed you name on a list so that the barbers knew who was next in line. There were two people cutting hair, one man and one woman, both were busy. The woman had someone who was waiting specifically for her to cut their hair, so I would get the guy. I could tell that the man who would cut my hair kept looking at me and glaring almost, like something was wrong, like he didn’t want to cut my hair. So another person came in and signed their name on the list, and they happened to be the same race as the barber. At this point the glairing look stopped, as if he was now happy. So when he was finished cutting the current customers hair he went to the list and read off the next name. My name was next on the list, but the guy who singed in after me was who’s name was called. My father was not happy, we had been waiting at least 15 minutes, and it should have been my turn. The whole time my dad was arguing with the barber, the barber just kept giving us dirty looks. We left and I got my hair cut somewhere else. My point is, it is not only minorities that are discriminated against, and although it does happen more often, they aren’t the only victims. And although discrimination is not right it does happen, to EVERYONE at some time or another.

However, only minorities live with it daily.

It's a distinction you need to make.

I realize that I don't have it as bad as some people, but it is unfair to say that minorities are the only ones who are ever discriminated against.

Wrong. All races discriminate against each other. No one race is more racist than the others. I have been turned down for more jobs because someone of a darker skin tone would do it cheaper. I could do it better, but they could do it cheaper. I got turned down for scholarships because I was white (I called in and asked why someone who was substantially less qualified won).

Please stop propagating this bullshit.

I am saying that only minorities live with it on a daily basis. You may certainly be discriminated against on an individual basis, but there is no generally negative racial atmosphere that your entire race lives through.

Please stop trying to equate your racism with that of institutionalized racism. That truly is bullshit.

My racism, as you so put it, is against everyone. I hate people. Really, it's more "species-ism." We all know, of course, that I'm not human. I truly hate Homo sapiens.

And white folks do get negative stereotypes. Especially in the South. For example, what state has the most folks that don't wear shoes? Kentucky. Where do you go to marry your cousin? Kentucky. Where do all the hillbillies live? Appalachia (East Kentucky!).

Just because white people are racist on a daily basis doesn't mean that black people (or green people, yellow people, purple people, brown people, pink people, etc) aren't racist BACK.

Those examples are stereotypes. Northern white society was the one that created those stereotypes about the South. The distinction here that you're missing is how these stereotypes are applied.

And no, I do not say that minorities cannot be racist back. I am saying that this does not equate to the same thing as white racism. There is no general environment of hostility against everyone except whites.

Let's take Asians for example. Have you seen "Balls of Fury"? In this day in age, no one dares wear black-face, but Christopher Walken felt perfectly fine wearing yellow-face.

But racism is all about people believing stereotypes and those stereotypes are necessary to start racism. Negative attributes generalized to a group of people can create the belief that those attributes are true throughout the group and therefore the group gets discriminated against.

Before the Civil Rights Movement, whites thought that blacks were dirty and less than them, which justified them separating "them" from "us". The stereotype that all Mexicans are lazy and don't want to work fuels the current anger toward illegal immigrants, stereotypes that all Muslims are suicide bombers provoke hate crimes on mosques, and yes, the stereotype that all the "hillbillies" from Appalachia and are dumb and inbred makes us ignore atrocities like mountaintop removal mining that make their lives hell.

Racism is all about judging without knowing and stereotypes necessarily define that judgment.

Just because a White person is discriminated against, that doesn't mean he was discriminated against for being White.

You are so full of it.

I'm a female Caucasian engineer and I get discriminated against daily. They always put me in the front for photos, ask me to do interviews, and expect me to do the writing for projects.

Guess what? Discrimination is life. We all judge everybody.

You have forced me to break out in song.

Everyone's a little bit racist
Sometimes.
Doesn't mean we go
Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
No one's really color blind.
Maybe it's a fact
We all should face
Everyone makes judgments
Based on race.

...

Everyone's a little bit racist
Today.
So, everyone's a little bit racist
Okay!
Ethinic jokes might be uncouth,
But you laugh because
They're based on truth.
Don't take them as
Personal attacks.
Everyone enjoys them -
So relax!

...

If we all could just admit
That we are racist a little bit,
Even though we all know
That it's wrong,
Maybe it would help us
Get along.

...

Everyone's a little bit racist
It's true.
But everyone is just about
As racist as you!
If we all could just admit
That we are racist a little bit,
And everyone stopped being
So PC
Maybe we could live in -
Harmony!

Go watch Avenue Q... you sound like you need it.

Every can be a little racist. But I hope you are not trying to equate the racism experienced by minorities to those of whites. Racism against minorities is societal based.

Even kindergarteners know this. 20/20 had a story on how a children view race. And negative views were applied to racial minorities.

I just, and I mean JUST a minute ago, finished practicing an anti-bias lesson plan with my five-year-old. We learned about melanin and carotene and hemoglobin and that those are what cause skin color variance and nothing more.

We mixed cornmeal and koolaid and cocoa to make skin tones in glasses and compared pictures of people of all different races to each "recipe." Then we made a collage of people of all different colors. But he would only put white people on it. I asked why, and he said, "Because white people are prettier." I asked why he felt that way, and he said, "Well dark people don't look like everybody else. They aren't on the books and stuff." Even though we had just cut out pictures of a bunch of people of all colors. It's true, though. Look at the majority of kids' books, toys, cartoons, etc. Very little color. It sends a message. Maybe not overtly, but the kids ALWAYS pick up on it.

Can I venture a guess that your charge's family is white, or dwells in a community that is mainly white? That would explain why he gravitates towards "white people."

Just like black kids that live, "in the hood" are probably going to choose pictures of black people... and Asian kids pictures of Asian people... because people gravitate towards what they are comfortable with, and they are usually comfortable with themselves, their family, and their community. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, as long as they are welcoming and accepting of others as well.

Because... Everyone's a little bit racist... sometimes!

Ever seen her do the bit about her mom, where she says, "Everybody lil bit gay!"

Also, have you ever seen teh study done with the dolls? The black girls choose the white dolls and ascribe adjectives like "pretty" and "good" to them, while calling the black dolls "bad" and "ugly" and "naughty." It's a pretty powerful video.

I love Margaret Cho.

There are some awesome quotes from her weblog floating around.

I'm a minority and I don't face racism and prejudice daily. There are probably more random accounts that I could tell you about, but never daily.

with it physically everyday. It means that the general racial atmosphere in this country is hostile to minorities. There is no such general hostility toward whites.

I agree completely. I'm of mixed ethnicity(Native America, Puerto Rican, and Scotish) and I've gotten discrimination from every front. It's immpossible not to get some discrimination because there will always be that one person who feels like you've gotten a helping hand because of your race.
