I've heard some really weird things over the years, but after seeing the news this morning, I have officially heard it all.
The horror movie Cloverfield opened a few days ago and has raked in nearly 41 million. Complaints have now surfaced that watching the movie may cause side effects including naseau. One would expect that the naseau would be from some sort of gruesome images, but no. Movie theaters have begun posting warnings about the movie because the way in which it was filmed has caused movie goers to become ill.
One theater posted the following warning:
Due to the filming method used for "Cloverfield," guests viewing this film may experience side effects associated with motion sickness, similar to riding a rollercoaster.
I laughed out loud when I read that. Not so much because it's funny (though it is funny), but because it ruined my plans. I was going to screw up my courage and go see the movie simply because I can't figure out what it's about. But, after reading the warnings, I don't suppose I will. The way the Bourne Ultimatum was filmed gave me a migraine. The quick spins and turns and flips and flops of the camera were more than my little brain could handle. I don't relish the same experience from a movie that will undoubtedly leave me with nightmares anyway simply so I may satisfy my curiosity.
But, it is really amusing. I've heard of people having epileptic episodes while playing video games and even from watching various movies, but never of the way in which a movie was filmed causing one to become physically ill. It's well... mildly funny. Here we thought movie watching was a relatively harmless activity, but alas, our couch potato visions of complete bliss have been summarily shattered by a roiling stomach and a dash to pay homage to the porcelain god.
I just wonder though, how many are going to go see the movie just because of the warnings? It's certainly, if nothing else, a unique way of getting people to the theaters simply because curiosity has been roused.
Ah! We have the best news media ever. They forget the important stuff, but boy oh boy! Movie viewing warnings get top billing.
That's just great stuff.

I'm not sure if it ever got warnings like this one did, but there were alot of people that got such motion sickness from watching The Blair Witch Project.
Disclaimer: I was in college (the first time around) when that movie came out and did engage in the guilty pleasure of convincing freshmen that it was a true story and that it was a documentary, not a movie.
Ah, how I miss the Blair Witch craze. It was great fun to go out in the woods in the middle of the night and scare the crap out of friends. Even though we were in Arkansas, everyone was terrified of the woods at night for a while after that one. Such fun lol.
