The Democrats: Look Ma! No Multiple Personality Disorder!

I can still remember when Jon Stewart and the Indecision 2004 crew made joke after joke about the obvious disjointed issues of the Democratic Party. There were the Unionists, the Treehuggers, the Human Rights Crusaders, the “Separation of Church and State” guys and gals, the Feminists, the Immigrants-rights workers, the Gays, the Black Pride Activists, the Anti-corporate’s, the Socialists, the Anarchists, the Hippies, the Gun-control moms, the Flag-burners, the Moderates, the Pacifists,… Sheesh! This could go on forever!

But there was a fundamental truth in the jokes. At that time each and every one of these “groups” was considered a separate “special-interest”. There was no cohesiveness. Not between the theories, ideas, projects, or criticisms of each group, nor between the individual self-identifying members of these “special-interest groups” within the Democratic Party. Where was the unity?

Change is coming. Heck! It’s already started! These issues are not separate and independent of each other, and it seems we are all starting to realize and take advantage of this. Each is interdependent of the other. We are learning how to link the problems and the theories to devise holistic solutions, and we are learning to work together to create a better world.

In the past, some individuals in the special-interest groups were wary of each other. Some unionists disliked and distrusted the hippies and treehuggers, and vice-versa. Today, we, as a community are awakening to the fact that each issue affects the other.

Corporations, obsessed with the bottom line, use unethical practices that hurt its employees and ship jobs overseas where environmental and labor regulations are lax. They obtain exclusive bidding privileges from the government to gain contracts for operating in combat zones, possibly influencing the politicians to engage in or maintain aggressive foreign policies.

In areas overcome by environmental devastation, and ridden with the violent struggle for resources, governments, corporations and arms dealers supply extremist groups (who often commit human rights abuses) with resources and weapons. When people at home protest against these policies that the government is allowing or supporting, they are ostracized, demonized and labeled unpatriotic.

In just these two characteristic examples we can see the interests of the anti-corporate’s, the unionists, the socialists, the Environmentalists, the Human Rights Activists, the Pacifists, the Gun-control moms, and anybody concerned with First Amendment rights.

We are one people fighting for one vision. When we fight for one of our “special-interests” we affect them all. We believe that the world deserves better and we are getting stronger.

Who knew? We really can change the world.

Excellent blog! Republicans developed their united front in earlier years, while democrats lagged behind, but now i feel as though they present a more unified stand on the issues, which is good for them! if only their presidential candidates would stop sniping...
