Probably not. I won't, at least, since I never watched/listened to him in the first place. In fact, I'd never even heard of him until his face and name became plastered all over the media for referring to the Rutger's women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos."
A lot of people seem to be in an uproar over this: he should be fired, he should stay, leave him alone, etc.
Do I think Imus is a bastard with some hidden racist/sexist agenda? No. Do I think that his career as a people-bashing radio host finally got him into trouble? Yes. Do I think he should learn from this? Absolutely. But I do think people are overreacting, especially Al Sharpton, who seems to use any and every excuse to throw stones at people to push his political agenda.
Imus made a very inappropriate and disrespectful comment. It was insulting to the Rutger's team, and now, instead of enjoying the success of their team's efforts, they have to deal with this crap, and I commend them on how they've handled the situation.
But Imus doesn't have to apologize to the whole damn world. He doesn't have to say he's sorry again and again to please every "offended group." He owes every ounce of sincere apology to the Rutger's team. If anyone is to call for his head on a silver platter, it's them. If he's to kiss ass for anyone to make up for this, it's them.
You know, the next time Rush Limbaugh makes a completely inappropriate and insulting remark about someone or a particular group of people, he should get the kind of shit that Imus is getting. So, that should be, what, tomorrow?
Seriously--and this isn't because of some bipartisan bullshit, either. For instance, remember over the November elections, when he insulted Michael J. Fox and said he was "faking" his Parkinson's?
"He is exaggerating the effects of the disease," Limbaugh told listeners. "He's moving all around and shaking and it's purely an act. . . . This is really shameless of Michael J. Fox. Either he didn't take his medication or he's acting" (Here's an article in case you're unfamiliar with the incident). First, he attacked the actor, saying he was faking, then after apologizing he turned Fox's stem cell ad into some "political agenda" by the Democrats, saying Fox was beign manipulated!
I was absolutely disgusted with Rush Limbaugh when I heard this. For those of you who have not had any personal experience with Parkinson's, it is an extremely debilitating disease. My grandfather had it for many years, and I watched as it slowly took a toll on his body and his mind. It is not something to be joked about or made fun of, and I applauded Michael J. Fox for the dignity he had when he stood up to that drug-addicted asshole.
If there is to be any change in this country, we can't just selectively single out people when they make insulting and degrading comments. You can't just selectively punish people for one thing and then pat other people of the back for the same thing.
