statchatory rape

ok well i was watching 20/20 last night and they had a section of this show about a man who was changed with sexual asult when he was 19. what happened was he was dating a 15 year old girl and she wanted have sex with him so they did. the mom found out and told the police not intending to ruin his life. the police aressted him after the girl told police it was her idea and she concented to it. he had to serve 7 years probation and he still has to register every year as a sex offender. this bothered me a lot because i dont believe he did anyting wrong. it was the girls idea and she was 15 so she knew the conciquences of her actions. for th first few years of his childrens life he had to have special government promistion to even see them. does anyone else think this is terrible. this is why im not quite sure i like the term rape in statchatory rape, because in my eyes its not rape. I also want to say that i dont want to affend anyone who may read this that was raped because i feel very bad for you and i am very sorry you ever had to experience that. I just want to know how you guys feel because this really bothered me and when i tried to talk to my mom she didnt understand my side. so please let me know what you think and again i dont mean to affend anyone who may have gone through this im truly sorry.

I think it is really sad when a situation like that happens. it kind of makes me scared because I personally like older guys and I used to date guys who were 18 and 19 when i was 16, but to me it doesnt matter they are not that different in age from me. Just because you are 19 and the other is say 15 it doesnt mean they dont think that differently because you are still a child at 19 and it is wrong to call it rape if both partys consented. I think it is bad to a certain point like a 25 year old man and a 15 yr old girl is wrong

How is it different? In both situations, the girl is still 15. But if the guy is 25 instead of 19, then he's taking advantage of her and suddenly she's too young to make that kind of decision?

A 15 year old girl is a 15 year old girl, no matter who she's having sex with, whether he's 20 or 50. So where do you draw the line? Why not at when someone is a legal adult? I just got this idea: How about legal adults shouldn't have sex with people who aren't legal adults yet.

That would set the line at about 18. Which means if one person is over 18 and the other isn't, there shouldn't be any sexual contact.

Just because a 15 year old girl thinks she's capable of making her own decisions doesn't mean she is.

States set the age of consent to whatever they want. It's usually between 14 and 18 for girls and 16 to 18 for boys.

Well, here's the problem with that suggestion. My ex-boyfriend is 9 months younger than me. We started dating when we were 16, and stayed together until he was almost 20. If we had chosen to have sex when we were both still minors, and continued that sexual contact when I turned 18, under your suggestion, I would have been a rapist. This is despite the fact that we were close in age, and both would have consented to the contact.

Only men can commit statuatory rape. I know, I don't get it either.

Just because women aren't usually charged with rape, doesn't mean they can't be. Mary Kay Letourneau, for instance, was charged with statutory rape and served several years in prison before she married her student.

Yea , I feel the same way. But I mean the court believes that minors are unable to correctly rationalize their actions.
