Sex and Violence

"You know I can't change, I can't change, I can't change,

but I'm here in my mold, I am here in my mold.

And I'm a million different people from one day to the next.

I can't change my mold, no,no,no,no,no

It justs sex and violence melody and silence"

The song 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' by the Verve really conveys thoughts of society as a whole. We are products of our environment. We can't change who we are because its our subconscious mind doing the talking. What we live in and what we're subjected to has an impact on our personalty, behavior, and interests. Would Albert Eintstein be the genius he was if he wasn't interested in math? Would Picasso decide to paint paintings if his father didn't decide to send him to art school?

But my point is in today's world we are subjected to sex and violence. Whether it be through the internet, television, or radio. There is no way being subjected to these things can be healthy for your psyche. The only way you can avoid being subjected to these things would be to live under a rock--who wants to do that?

I just find it interesting that where we are today essentially creates the rest of our life.

today is the first day of the rest of your life, live it.

That is by far my FAVORITE song... Of pretty much ever, really. And to be honest, I have never really thought about the lyrics that way.

And I really like your points about being subjected to sex and violence, and that it really must not be healthy... If you ever watch the Simpsons, they have a lot of really interesting things to say about it, via "The Itchy and Scratchy Show." I never understood the point of the segment, until I saw the episode where they take a vacation to Itchy and Scratchy Land. Essentially, they are conveying that we subject kids to mindless and entertaining violence all the time, and that it isn't healthy!

And as for the sex part, I HATE how often children's movies, made for children, include mindless sexuality. Sure, maybe kids don't understand the song lyrics in the soundtrack, but the vibe certainly sinks in!!! If you've seen the movie "Happy Feet," you know what I mean. The whole Barry White character? Appalling! I couldn't believe that I had to sit there with my four year old little sister and watch a cartoonized version of a sexual cult, essentially. And the music was equally as bad.

I like what you have to say, in fact, I think I'll make you my buddy!

I love that song. It's sad but true. We are products of our society. The only thing is everyone is affected differently-possibly with different intensities. Are you saying how life was back in Picasso's and Einstein's days were significantly different and that is what significantly influenced them and became their interests?-Whereas today it's sex and violence that would influence us?
