Rose Petals on the Bathroom Floor

I woke up this morning, got dressed, and walked out my dorm door. I looked down at the floor briefly and saw a few small red objects. My mind immediately sprang to “Somebody dropped their trash and didn’t bother picking it up”. I walked down the hall to the bathroom where I noticed something strange. Here too, were more of those red shapes on the floor. Now I could see that they were rose petals.

Despite being groggy at seven something in the morning, this sight would have confused me anyway. I mean, how many times do you find rose petals on the floor of a public bathroom? For that matter, when do you find rose petals anyway.

The trail of petals led to the second stall, and I purposely avoided that stall. I mentally noted my actions, wondering why I would be suspicious. Well it was a strange situation, that’s all.

I walked to the bathroom again later in the day, seeing that the rose petals had not been picked up. They still formed a trail to the second bathroom stall. Curious, I entered the stall and immediately looked up. There was nothing up there but blank ceiling.

This is where I get to the point of this blog entry. At first when I saw the trail of petals on the floor, I was reminded of movies where boyfriend do cutesy things like--well--leave a trail of rose petals to the location of some hidden gift or whatever. But I question how a bathroom would fit into such a scenario. Was it maybe some creepy stalker, trying to lure a girl away and do God-knows-what?

It makes me question how I came to such an oddball conclusion. It seems that hours of TV and movies and novels have made me expect such a scary thing to happen in the real world. I wonder, however, if my response was really towards how our society is at this moment, when women can be kidnapped off public streets and raped, or how random acts of violence follow innocents to the grave. The perversion of American culture makes me so worried that I actually looked up at the ceiling, expecting to see a hidden camera!

When I picked up a rose petal and found that it was fake, all the mysteriousness and illusion surrounding it evaporated. Perhaps it was simply some joke left behind from a girl down the hall. Perhaps I worry too much.

It is peculiar to note how my behavior changed after seeing the rose petals, like avoiding the bathroom stall they led to and being extra aware of who else was in the bathroom. In certain situations, this could be a good reaction. But in the girls bathroom on the third floor, it just makes me feel a little foolish for being so caught up in negative news reports and scary movies.

Before I even read this part of your blog, "At first when I saw the trail of petals on the floor, I was reminded of movies where boyfriend do cutesy things like--well--leave a trail of rose petals to the location of some hidden gift or whatever." .... I also felt like what you were describing in your blog was similar to something that would be in a movie or a novel. And with that I reacted the same why by shouting at my computer "Go in the stall! Go in the stall!" This reaction is similar to those that people may have while sitting in a movie theater. When you walked away the first time I was like "Awwww", and the second time I was shouting for you to go in it again because I myself was curious. Therefore, I agree with your statement that says, "It seems that hours of TV and movies and novels have made me expect such a scary thing to happen in the real world." People nowadays occupy so much of their time with video games, TV shows, the computer, etc. that it all begins to blend in with the "real world". Good blog!

I'm glad you had such a good reaction to this blog! Too bad my ratings keep sucking...

Yeah, I seriously think the media has infiltrated our minds in the way that fiction and reality begin to overlap. Or maybe it's just me and you....

This was very interesting and kind of strange it makes me think. I seem to think to much about things but my first reaction would be to run out of the bathroom. But I think I also watch to many movies and read to many books because when it is dark and late at night I tend to get paranoid like someone will jump out and grab me...lol

I don't think this feeling is too unreasonable. I hope you're not too paranoid!

When it started getting dark earlier and earlier in the day I got to be like this. I'd be walking back from my last class and it's all dark out and there's virtually nobody around... Yeah, I get paranoid too! Especially since this warning was sent out through e-mail about a girl on my campus who was almost abducted.b

You write well and there is nothing wrong with being cautious.

the media is indeed responsible for a great deal of our worries!

"TV is the number one tool to fill you with whatever they want you to believe…"

It's true, and I learn even more about it through all my TV/Media related classes. Kinda scary sometimes, like there's always been somebody present telling you what to believe, what stereotypes are true, etc. And we call that ever-present being the television...

Maybe it was just me, but the first thought I had was "someone is getting it on in the second stall". I lived on an all girls floor with community bathrooms last year and you could always tell when someone's boyfriend was in town. Stuff like that was not uncommon at all. But then again, no telling for the types of girls who lived on my floor.

Your reaction is funny! You must have some interesting hallmates...I mean, sex in the bathroom?! How unsanitary, right?

I currently live on an all-girl floor as well, but to my knowledge no one has done anything more in the bathroom than, well you know... but you usually can tell when a girl's boyfriend is over because suddenly her dorm door is closed.

That's funny and still really strange at the same time. At least the blog was interesting it reminded me of something I would find in a novel or something. Did you ever find out why someone would do something so weird?

Nope, never did find out. The petals eventually disappeared when the cleaning ladies took over. I do wonder what was going on ...
