Tobacco should be illegal

Tagged:

Tobacco, like any other drug, has harmful side affects and can even result in death. Not only does it hurt the user but when smoking the smoker can hurt others due to second hand smoke. If this drug and its various forms are so harmful and addictive then why isn't it already illegal?

Many states and restaurants have already started to try to control the issue. Some states have a law that says people can only smoke outdoors and many restaurants have special seating areas for smokers. While this does help it doesn't eliminate the problem completely.

The problem is that if we made the use of tobacco illegal it would only create a black market for it that tobacco users would go to. It may not even stop the problem it may just make it worse due to the severity of the consequenses.

What the government needs to do is find a way to keep tobacco users from hurting non tobacco users through second hand smoke (kind of like what some of the states are doing). But making tobacco fully illegal may be a good idea to many of us but it may be impossible to enact. This issue needs to be solved but it is difficult because of the many issues atatched to it.

your right making it illegal would be more hurtfull then just regulating it. so only some states regulate it. eventually they all will or they all wont. but the truth is tobacco has been at the center of our economy since the colonials started farming it to sell to the europeans who got there tobacco from the east. so illegality will probably never ever happen. i know i used to smoke but i broke myself from the habit and now i just take a couple of drags from rolled organic tobacco, which is still harmfull it just doesnt have all the chemical additives that commercial tobacco does. ever wonder why Rx drugs are legal? most of the time the side effects are more hurtfull then benifull. so maybe instead of tobacco you should advocate making perscription drugs illegal.~}chatiks si chatiks{~

What the government needs to do is stop making so much money off of it themselves, and that's not gonna happen.

Yeah, if you made tobacco illegal you might as well flush our economy down the toilet, because that generates HUGE revenue, and will always generate huge revenue. It is harmful, and incredibly addicting, i will admit that, but it isn't as harmful as some of the other drugs out there, illegal or otherwise. What we need to do is not make more drugs illegal but make less drugs illegal in my opinion. using drugs is a personal choice, and therefore should not be a choice that the government has a say on.

And second hand smoke, while it is fairly dangerous, it isn't even close to as harmful as everyone tries to let on.

Totally with you on this one... why do people even make a choice to smoke, do drugs, it seems really pointless to me.

I would really appreciate it!

I agree that tobacco should be made completely illegal, it is true that this drug kills so many innocent people, and it is unbelievable that they have not made it illegal. It not only kills its user but also people around them. I smoked for years, and I have now stopped, I feel healthier for it. I know the consequences of smoking first hand, not only because I smoked, but also because my mother died from smoking. It is hard for me to believe that this drug is still out on the market free for almost anyone to buy.

I don't agree. In a time like this we need the revenue for our government. In the 30s when there was the Great Depression, the three most active markets with the biggest revenues were alcohol, cigarettes, and movies. Now, today (in what I believe to be) a recession is occurring and all the same exact language and worries that were around in the 30s are popping up. We need cigarettes and alcohol to keep this economy going, as slow as it is going, they still help.

I am however against smoking, but it is a personal choice. If you want to do it, do it.

You are going in the wrong direction. Whatever happened to freedom?

Rather than making tobacco illegal, the government should lift its other unconstitutional prohibitions on the other drugs it has made illegal.

I don't disagree with you that tobacco is harmful. I don't believe it is inappropriate to protect non-smokers by making smokers take their habit outside or into special areas. But where in the Constitution is the government given the power to regulate what we put in our bodies?

totally agree. making drugs illegal will never solve the problems of addictions. People need rehabilitation not jail
