He stole my pants

As I'm reading through the various headlines on yahoo.com (my chosen source for random news), I came accross something that really disturbed me.  It could have been the paris hilton story, or the newest bright idea of bush, or even the war in Iraq, but no  it was something even more bothersome.  I dont' know if anyone else has been following this but apparently a lawyer is suing his dry cleaner over lost pants.

According to yahoo.com "Pearson filed suit after the cleaners lost his pants in 2005. Jin Chung, Soo Chung and Ki Chung said they located the pants a few days later, but Pearson said they were not his.Pearson counted 12 separate violations of a consumer-protection law over 1,200 days, multiplied by the three defendants. At $1,500 per day, that is $65 million. He also seeks $15,000 to rent a car to take his clothes to another cleaner for the next 10 years, among other charges. He has rejected several settlement offers.Pearson has since reduced his claim to $54 million"

Most people in reading this will probably say, " oh well the judge won't let it go through", but no the judge pressed it.  The dry cleaner owners who are Korean immigrants will have to pay $54 million.  The owners may return to South Korea because they have become so disillusioned by the United States.  How have we come to this point? How have we allowed our country to get to the point where a lawyer can sue people who are just trying to make a small living because they lost his pants.  I'm sure he has more pants. Not to mention that they found his pants and they denied they were his.

All I want to do is just shake the lawyer.  They're pants, he's going to ruin these peoples lives over pants.  I'm sure he makes plenty of money to buy another pair of pants.  Have them buy him a new pair of pants.  That would seem adaquete.  OK, a new pair of pants and 100 bucks for the inconvenience.  How do we jump from you lost my pants give me $54 million? I don't agree with a lot of things going on in our country today but when we allow someone to take advantage of other people in such an extreme case, we have a serious problem.

So, apparently, if you have a satisfaction gauranteed sign up, it's not a good faith sign anymore that shows people you'll do your best to satisfy them.  Now, it's opening you up to be taken advantage of.  I don't know maybe it's just me.  Maybe i'm the only one that this bothers.  Please tell me I'm not the only one.

"How do we jump from you lost my pants give me $54 million?"

Because judges like this one let people get away with ridiculously frivolous lawsuits. It's senseless.
