1st Place Win

This weekend my high school's German club and I went down to Austin, TX for the state German competition. There were 20 of us and we were all pumped up, and ready for the competition, an event we had not one a single award at for the past three years. When it was time for the awards ceremony, everyone knew we had done better than in years past but no one expected what happened, we won first place in the German Folk dance completion.

I was shocked, so happy, thrilled, my heart was racing. This was my senior year, and I was the captain of the folk dance team, and although I knew we were good, I wasn't sure if we were that good. After the initial shock wore off I started to wonder about competition and people who have to win.

I was raised being told that "winning isn't everything," it is more important to have fun, and if you win in the process, that's great. But the school that got second place in the competition has one first place for years. I am sure that they were frustrated, no one saw us coming from fifth place at regional, to first at state.

So my whole reason for posting this blog is, I wanted to know if you believe that you have to win, or is it best to try hard and have fun?

Common wisdom says that winning isn't everything, but if you notice, most people don't like losing. Winning isn't the most important thing, but it's still important to us.

Trying to better yourself doesn't require entering into a competition. As soon as you've joined a competition, people are going to try as hard as they can to win, because it's human nature. You feel good when you win. People like to feel good.

Good job on winning States.
