Last Friday was the biggest game of the season for my high school football team. It was the match up between the two undefeated teams in the conference. Ashwaubenon and East De Pere were both ranked 4-0 before the game and only one team left with a 5-0 record.
We started the game and the Redbirds (East De Pere) scored a touch down with 7:37 left in the game.
Then all the sudden the rain started coming and the lightning struck. There was only 21 seconds left in the first quarter and everyone had to leave the field and head to the high school.
As a new tradition the Jaguars (Ashwaubenon) made a giant red bird out of bags and duck tape. So, while we were waiting out the storm in the gym some of the students took out the bird. The wrestled with it and eventually it broke so we had to think of something else to do.
We waited and waited and eventually after an hour and ten minutes the game started back up.
With the rain coming down like cats and dogs the players were on the field and doing their best to fight for the right to be called undefeated.
With 9:20 left in the first half the Jaguars scored three points and the soaking crowd of students went wild with the knowledge that there is still hope.
By halftime the Jaguars had the 10-7 lead but weren’t getting too excited. They knew that they still had a fight ahead of them. The rain kept up and eventually with about two minutes left in the forth quarter the rain let up but the wind kept coming.
By the end of the game the Jaguars won 17-13. They fought for the right to be called undefeated and they got it. But, you have to give credit where credit is due. The Redbirds put up a fight and even though we are competitors we’re friends in the end.
After the four hour game, everyone went home soaked and frozen to the bone. Some were happy and others were disappointed but someone had to lose.
Until next week the Jaguars remain undefeated.
