Results of Concealed Carry in Shelby County

Here is an article written by Chris Conley.  I have a feeling from some of his word choices that he supports Gun Control, but I give him credit for remaining fairly neutral in the article itself (A rarity, especially on the anti-gun side)

The article notes that the number of Justifiable Homicides went up in Memphis from 11 in 2006 to 32 in 2007, and gives a couple of options as to why.

The first option is that there are many more people in the county who have concealed carry permits.  Some suggest that the thugs are finding themselves mugging, carjacking or trying to rape armed people.  Historically, that doesn't turn out well for the criminal.

You see, TN, like other states with intelligent lawmakers, does not require that the individual run from aggression against them.  If someone is carjacking them, or breaking into their home, they are not required to try and find a way out (Or, later in court, plead before the judge as to why they couldn't jump out of that second story window instead of shooting the criminal trying to rape his wife)... they can pull out their pistol and end the confrontation.

Here's a little trip into the mind of a criminal:  If I can do something, and you have to run away from me, there is no reason for me to not do it.  If I can do something, and you can shoot me.... I might decide to not do it.  Particularly if the odds are high that you're someone who would be armed.

"It's hard to put your finger on it," said police Lt. Joseph Scott. "There are more handgun carry permits, there is more education, but you can't say that's the reason."

I'm afraid that I have to disagree with police Lt. Joseph Scott.  I have no problem suggesting that is the reason.  How else is it that the rapist or mugger ends up dead in a justifiable homicide?  Foul Language?

In Mary Poppins Dick Vandyke plays 2 roles. One a chimney sweep and the other a banker who dies laughing. Dying laughing is a progressive way to go.
As a funeral director, I often recommend this.

I don't know... seems kind of painful.

I don't know that there is a 'best' way to die... i'll tell you a bad way though:

Drowning. especially if you're awake and alert for it.

Fuck drowning. You lose oxygen for a couple of moments and you're unconscious. Burning. I do not want to burn to death. Burning at the stake wouldn't be as bad as being burnt alive.

couple of moments? You're fully conscious when you take in that 'breathe' of water. Your body goes into convulsions. you froth at the mouth. Then, after a few MINUTES of no oxygen, you pass out.

burning? Very painful... though after receiving X amount of pain, the body shuts down and you generally lose consciousness.

I wouldn't want to go either way, but I prefer to avoid the more physcological methods, like drowning or being buried alive... where you have minute (or possibly an hour or two if buried alive) to contemplate and understand what is happening and what is going to happen.

*shudder*

Shot gun to the head wouldn't be too bad.

I'd like to avoid that as well, but might prefer it to drowning, burning or being buried alive.

At that point, it is all a matter of degrees.

I'd much rather be the one armed so as to NOT be made a victim of being shot, but I'm one of those evil White, Straight, Christian, Conservative, Gun-nut males.
