I live very happily in this musical time warp. I listen to Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and all the other greats from that area. I listen to opera and classical of almost any variety. (I dislike Peking Opera for it hurts my ears.) I listen to big band and swing styles, as well as tango and others less obvious.
When I turn on the radio here in my college town, I'm frustrated because I can't find a good jazz station. They have a good classical station, but sometimes one just needs variety. I find myself flipping through the stations unsatisfied by the modern musical selections, and most of those found on the "oldies" station. I can honestly say that I'm not a fan of any sort of really mainstream music since even the modern stuff I do like is not found on any of the radio stations that I'm aware of in this country.
Then I have to hear people blasting it out their car or home windows. I don't mind if they destroy their own ears, but when the music of this modern musical crap my grandfather loudly claims "... is nothing but a bunch of racket designed to make one go deaf!" I'm starting to agree with him when I hear it blaring out of my coworker's computer.
I challenge these people to explore the options beyond the popular radio. I challenge them to turn the radio down so they can enjoy it without disrespecting others. Start with your favourite artist on Pandora, and find out what your musical genome tastes are. Listen, learn and enjoy what else the world has to offer for you.

Check the internet and see if you can find any good underground bands, and check out obscure musicians when they come to your area. Tickets are usually lower than mainstream stuff, and you might find something you enjoy. And you're right, people need to broaden their horizans past what is offered on the national radio stations and MTV.

I usually forget about those until I stop by one of the local coffee shops that isn't Starbucks. They seem to know all that stuff. I should make a stop by for some hot chocolate or tea again soon...

another place to look for local band performances are the smaller music stores, and independently owned book or art stores. Fliers will be everywhere. :-)
Also just try a google search for local music venues. Most of them, once you find the names, will have Myspace pages and a calendar of upcoming events. Tickets at these venues probably run between 5-12 dollars, depending on the band.
Judging from your profile, I would think you would like bands such as Dntel, the postal service, the album leaf, lymbyc systym, the decemberists, stars, and architecture in helsinki. I think at least a couple of those are touring right. You may want to look up websites and see if they'll be in your area at all.
Also, check out pandora.com and last.fm. Both of these sites will help you find new music based on what you already listen to and recommend new bands for you to try.
I... take this stuff way too seriously I think... :-P

I have heard of all these bands and like/love them all. I have them on my musical selection at home, but rarely do I take my external harddrive with me to work so I can listen to "my music". I usually just listen to whatever others are because it is new for me.
I've discarded my Myspace account months (maybe it has been years?) ago now. I never saw a use in that place. Do you need an account to see the venue calendars?
The city that I live in is a rapidly changing college town. There used to be a steady place that played musical venues from local artists, but they have shut down. It seems like all that is left are waterlogged flyers stapled to telephone poles and coffeehouses. I'll keep looking though!
