I find it extremely odd and somewhat selfish that a pastor in a local church was blaming people in the church, the "sinners," for natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. How can anyone blame people for things like that? I just seems so bizarre to me that a pastor, an educated and well-respected man in society, would say something lke this. I mean, why would God want to punish te people of Louisiana and nearby states? And most of all, if it is the "sinner's" fault that Hurricane Katrina happened, why would the sins of people in Rhode Island affect what natural disasters hit a very different part of the country? It is ridiculous and I can't believe that no one questioned his lesson. I mean, what was he trying to teach?? That people need to stop sinning? It's human nature to sin! All humans are born evil, that is what the bible teaches. And yet the pastor makes it seem now like he doesn't teach from the bible. It honestly sounds like he's teaching from an old farmers' almanac!! if I am wrong, I would like to hear others' opinionsabout this, but it really seems ridiculous to me. Would this mean that tidal waves, tornados, and forest fires are a way for God to punish people for sin? It doesn't make sense, even if it were true, that God would punish a totally different part of the country or even thek world.

I am embarrassed to admit that members of the Israeli government (where I am from... the government, like all governments, unfortunately has some crazy right-wing religious people) have actually blamed the tsunamis and earthquakes in Asia on the growing acceptance of gay people. Sad. Why would God create gay people and then punish totally random people because the gay people's friends don't care who the gay person likes to sleep with (or fantasize about, or whatever..)?

"What a man does for pay is of little significance. What he is, as a sensitive instrument responsive to the world's beauty, is everything!"
H. P. Lovecraft
How could someone even think that? There's no correlation at all...
-Amanda-
In the OT there is, the NT there isn't but since the God of the OT and NT is the same, then it applies to both.
What correlations are there in the OT?
-Amanda-
In the story of Genesis (Chapters 6-9), "god" punishes the world for its wickedness by sending a great flood to destroy the world.
"And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them." (Genesis 6:5-7)
That's where the belief originates (more or less).

I totally don't agree with them, but having grown up with people who believed that sort of thing, here's their reasoning (in my example in the comment above):
1. God doesn't like people being gay. Being gay is sinful. People should not be gay and should not practice their gayness and no one should accept gayness.
2. People are accepting gayness. People are BEING GAY. Some states in America are allowing same-sex unions. This is BAD. God is ANGRY.
3. Because God is ANGRY, God shows his anger through an earthquake, a tsunami, etc. According to some this is to express his great anger, etc, according to others it's for punishment.
That's it in a nutshell. I can actually see how it makes sense to some people but I think it's pretty stupid. Even if it was something like... people accepting rape so God is angry.... why would God take out his anger on some random Asian villages? How are we supposed to make the connection? "Hm, a tsunami means rape in God-language... this village in Asia spelled backwards and inverted is the name of a town in the US where a rape occured last week... yeah, we just happen to know that because the victim told us, too. OMG, the tsunami occured because God's pissed at that!"
Yeah.
