A Few Words about the Gay Issue, The Laramie Project, and My Goat

bridge's picture

What is the “Gay Issue”? Well apparently, not everyone believes that everyone, no matter their sexual orientation, has a right to be together.

In high school, when I’d learn about a person’s …preferences, I would not treat him or her any differently than I had before. They were still the same person.

If we want to talk in terms of religion, then let me say clearly and plainly: I don’t know much about religion, but I’m pretty sure there’s nothing saying that gays are going to Hell. Killing a person, that’s bad. Liking a person, not so bad. The “rules” of religion were established long ago, before over population and that important thing called free will. Religions wanted straight people so that they’d end up with more people in that faith! Okay…I’m not using 100% fact here, this is merely speculation that my Dad has told me. Sounds pretty believable though.

There’s an incredible modern play called The Laramie Project. It was a play put on by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre. These actors interviewed people in a small town in Wyoming after a brutal accident occurred there. A man, Matthew Sheppard, was killed on October 7th, 1998 because he was gay. The play is incredible and stirs many feelings; hatred toward the murderer, compassion for the friends of the murdered man, sadness for the loss of a great mind. I hope this is one medium that will teach the leaders of tomorrow some acceptance.

And then, there is my goat. I don’t have Billy anymore, but I do remember what a character he was. This goat was a little confused to say the least. My goat, my male goat, had feelings for my dog…my male dog. Maybe Billy was just confused, and that could explain why he was humping the wrong species. I didn’t shun my goat because he, um, hit on the dog.

Reverend Fred Phelps: Do you believe the Bible? Do you believe you’re supposed to separate the precious from the vile? You stand over there ignorant of the fact that the Bible--two times for every verse it talks about God’s love it talks about God’s hate….. (The Laramie Project, Pg. 77-78)

Do we want to be like Fred Phelps? The man who, in the Laramie Project, protests outside the funeral of Matthew Sheppard?

Reverend Fred Phelps: Is homosexuality--is being a fag okay? What do you mean it’s not for you to judge? If God doesn’t hate fags, why does he put ‘em in hell?….You see the barrenness and sterility of your silly arguments when set over against some gospel truth? Barren and sterile. Like your lifestyle (pg. 79)

Oh shut up, Phelps. What do you know? What does anybody know about God or religion or sexual orientation or what we should or shouldn’t do? Nothing, that’s right. We can make our arguments, and we can quite the Bible until all that’s left is the copyright date. There is no solid gospel truth that is solid gospel truth. How do we know how the Bible has changed over the years? And I dare anyone to show me a direct quote that says that gays are evil…or whatever it is you’re trying to prove. Heck, you were rock-solid on that whole “the world is flat” thing, weren’t you?

Weren’t you?

It's so moving and interesting!

I like the line, "There is no solid gospel truth that is solid gospel truth." It's so true. If there were, there wouldn't be so many different factions of Christianity. Everyone has different HUMAN interpretations of an ancient HUMAN book. It's like saying there is only one right way of interpreting "The Waste Land," and I think T.S. Eliot would be mightily offended by such an assertion.

Thanks for the comment, ew. I was actually hoping you'd respond. You have such a great voice for this type of topic, and I was hoping I could do it some justice.

The Laramie Project really is great. I auditioned at my university last semester but didn't make it in. Oh well, it was still really good and MUCH better than the movie. There are some things movies can't accomplish.

Oh, and I'm glad you liked that line about gospel truth. That's what I strongly believe also (of course...this is already obvious isn't it?). Too much time has passed for us to be sure of any writings, really. Especially one as popular as the Bible.

And I LOVE her! You probably don't have quite the same feelings for her as I do, though. Damn, she's hot.

I'd have to agree with you on that one. Not quite the same feelings at all...

What character did she play?

She was one of the reporters. And no, I don't know the play well enough to just throw that out there. IMDB.com rocks! I can't tell you how many trivia disputes it has solved!

IMDB does rock. That site helped me out with a seriously difficult research project.

think if they except something than they may turn out that way. I have also heard about people being afraid that if they find out someone is gay they will start liking them. My friend disagrees with it only because someone who was gay stalked him and tried to break him and his girlfriend up. He was fine with the person being gay, until he started liking him and annoying him.

As for your goat Billy.. he must have found a lovely attraction to your dog. My male dog used to hump my other male dog. I think they also get so excited they just can't contain themselves.

I believe I heard about that murder. I watched a story on TV one time that really made me ill. I'm not going to disclose detail because it was one of the most screwed up thing for someone to go through. Good blog though I like the way you compared a variety of different things.

Thanks, I like how you added your own (or your friends) story to the mix.

I tried being a little different with this blog. I didn't want it to sound like the average rant about how being gay is okay. I hope the randomness didn't throw anybody off.

There was a homosexual male student that was beaten up on the street while I was in college. Loads of students gathered to protest and march to draw attention to the hate crime. We even stopped at the exact spot that it ocurred near the main drag in town and had a sort of press conference with reporters. There is no need for people like Matthew Sheppard to die.

I disagree that there is no gospel truth. For me, the Bible has truth and it's not just another writing. I'm not offended by your comments, but I do disagree. Perhaps we have to agree to disagree on this one.

Perhaps we have to.

There's no problem with disagreeing. As long as we're not jerks about it, then there's no problem.

Ok, agreed.

And whoops, and didn't hit reply. This is a reply to Bridge's "Perhaps we have to..." We're agreeing to disagree. Yeah ProU!
