What's racism?

Will someone describe racism.  I think that a lot of the racism comes from it being SUCH A BIG DEAL, taht everyone is scared to offend someone of a different race.  Mainly white peole can not even joke about racism because they have it so easy or whatever. (harder for us to get into college).  But either way, it seems blacks can be prejiduce to whites, I know I could care less if someone calls me a craker.  Or anything else.  I just let it go, what does it matter to me.  But I can not say anything that is like that to a black man or he will kick and scream (metaphorically).  Is this true though?  Would a black man really care any more than I would?  I don't know, but racism is ridiculous.  No one likes racist so if some guy is racist toward you let it go.  Cause guess what, he's one of very few people taht feel that way.  And because he is racist I automatically like you better.  So can't we just let race go.  It is annoying to have to think before I speak around a differnt race so I don't offend anyone.  Watch Carlos Mencia, he's go it right.  He jokes about every race and has a very good message about it just being fun and funny and if you get offended too bad.  That's the way it should be, people get offended too easily, every one needs to lighten up.

I believe racism is accusing someone with something because of a trait that takes them away from someone else; looking at someone and thinking that because they are "different" and saying things that separate them from everyone else in your mind. Its a little confusing but i know that half the nation are somewhat racist. I see no colors. ~<3~Love and be loved!~<3~

I understand what your saying, and if racism was only about stereotypes and crude jokes it wouldn't be such a big deal. What is a big deal is who racism does effect minorities in this country. Do you think things are equal enough in the U.S? Do you disagree that institutionalized racism effects entire groups of people, costing them equal opportunities to health care, quality education, jobs, healthy environments to live in? Do you disagree that minorities are being unfairly treated in the court system? That racism has effected the number of Blacks in prison? Just wondering were you stand about these issues.

The whole idea of prejudging someone is nausiating. Just because someone looks like Paris Hilton doesn't mean she is a ditzy and loose airhead. Same with anything. Elderly, Mexicans, Lesbians, midgets, What ever it is. If people just looked at people as individual human beings, and get to know the person then that is how we all will respect eachother as the individuals that we all are. Everyone is different, and everyone is the same. Superficial crap that we stereotype on is just for Lazy hacks who don't want to think (Carlos Mancea is a good example).

Racism is built out of hatred and assumptions about other cultures. The five people who live with me represent four different races, and we can be real about racial differences and tensions that exist in society without offending one another. It's one thing to have a discussion, but it's another to jump to conclusions about a race one is not a part of and therefore cannot fully understand.

Personally, i'm offended by racism and racists jokes whether or not their meant to be offensive and whether or not they're coming from a racist or even someone of my own race(s).

I avoid racists at all cost and I also acknowledge that racists and stereotypical-thinking can come from someone of the same race and can be towards someone of that same race.

I don't hang out with people who give off that sort of energy.

In a way, I will say that racism is not a big deal at all for me because I avoid those people. But I don't think most people understand the extent of stereotypical thinking in our society.

It's so bad that it goes beyond personal tastes and into personal lifestyle.

There are racist-thinking about eating habits, where one is suppose to travel, etc.

They're stereotypes about how one is suppose to live and die; not having certain experiences, exploring certain things, etc.

It takes over one's personal life quest.

They're are stereotypes about how one is suppose to make a film; subject matter, cast, main character, genre.

Write a book, make a play, what your religion is suppose to be, career choice, etc.

I don't feel that racism is a problem for me and I see and acknowledge all of the hypocritical thinking that is present between those being racist and those experiencing it (vise versa).

But for me it is not something that I can simply ignore. Racism gives the individual the impression that there is no other right way to live other than under stereotyped media norms.

Racism is when you believe the stereotypes, and use them in your life. Everyone is judgmental but acknowledging that these stereotypes are not indicative of any person is when we breakdown the cycle or prejudice. It isn't easy to navigate that line, but it shouldn't be. If you've ever had a racist comment directed at you, you can understand that it can be like a knife in your chest. If you have enough of these comments said to you, it starts to change you. Why shouldn't we be careful about what we say when it can impact someone to this extent?
