Trying to Escape the Life that Parents' Fail to Provide

Nowadays, the only way to truly make a future for one's self is to further their education, whether that means college, vocational training, or anything amongst those means. However these options do not come cheap in many cases. There is an alarming rate of debt which is being incurred in the United States daily, and no, I'm not talking about the government, I'm talking about everyday Joe Schmo's... our PARENTS. These debts are completely separate of the debts of student loans, etcetera. Even with many people of our parents' generation drowning in debt, the cost of college continues to rise.

How can we be expected to go on to college? How will people of the younger generation escape the pathes that their parents have laid for them? One option is to just start new in a college in a new state. However the cost of out of state tuition is ridiculously high! Even with the help of financial aid [including Federal Stafford Loans] one can only expect that at most, half of their tuition will be covered. For many attending out of state institutions, this can still leave them with over $10,000 to pay on their own. Now what? They are in the college of their dreams but have no way to pay the rest of the money. Scholarships are an option, but unless you have very strong skills, they may be fairly unrealistic. And then there is the ever popular student loan. I for one will be 17 when I enter college. I cannot apply for a student loan without someone with GOOD CREDIT to co-sign with me. How will that be possible with more and more American parents who have drifted into the realm of extremely poor credit?

Careless choices that parents made, maybe even long before the birth of their child, or at least the thought of college arose, could possibly put their children into the same problems they are facing. And seeing as these people are not classified as destitute or the such, many children of these families do not receive the extra aid for education that they so greatly need. Students in predicaments like my own have no where to turn and might as well give up, despite the fact that they would like nothing more than to make a successful life for themselves. Many parents don't even know how badly they are hurting the future of their child[ren] until it is much too late. It's sad to think that even in the times when education is at utmost importance, many still cannot achieve their goals because of the poor choices made by their parents.

That is so true. My mom has a lot of debt and I told her she needed to pay it off before I did my FASFA and she was like why should my debt affect you??? I tried to tell and I was right. I couldn't even go to the school I wanted to. I have scholarships, and I was making sure I didn't get any loans cause they're a bitch!!! I don't know what parents are thinking these days. They need to learn to live within their means so they can help their children out when they get to college. It's so hard having to worry about financial aid and being at college when you don't have a job. And the cost of colleges and universities are rising every year by thousands and thousands of dollars; it's ridiculous.

Exactly. Parents have no idea just how deeply their financial situations cut into their children's future. Loans are almost a necessity for all students, and scholarships are not a realistic option for every person. I just wish parents really understood how they harm their child's future welfare.

I know the feeling, I went to local college for two years and took 3 years off and I am going to go back to finish my degree in college. I am paying of the loan for college. I really wanted to go to The Art Instiitue of Pitsburg to complete my degree, but the price is out of my budge. Like I have one! I have to take out loans and I am just going to go back to the local college to finish my degree. then just move out of the state like New York or California to practice my degree in photography.I think every parent should have to start a saving account to put money in when the child is born, that will go for the cost of college.
