Progress in the Supermarket

Tagged:

Have you ever walked down the aisles of the supermarket and really looked at what was there? We have 50+ types of crackers, even more juices and enough cereal to feed several small countries (for a very long time). If you step back though and weed out the products that are actually healthy for you...you might be surprised.

In a country where we devote time to finding the next best thing, we seem to have changed the idea of "food" in the process. A hundred years ago, they never would have had the chemically loaded junk that we do. They wouldn't even have imagined such foods. Our health is declining as obesity starts to take over our world. Maybe in order to have progress in the supermarket, we need to regress to a world left behind.

If you stick to the outsides of the supermarket you will find things that are wholesome (for the most part) and the most healthy. Fruits, Vegetables, dairy and meats usually find homes in these areas. These foods have supported many people over the years. Its when you step out of these areas that you find foods loaded with concentrated sugars, high fructose corn syrup and other chemically altered additives. Maybe we need to pay more attention to stocking shelves with foods that have ingredients we can pronounce and less time trying to come up with the world's newest cracker/soda combination.

This is one area where "progress" may have take us in the wrong direction.

Good blog. Yes it is true that back in the day food was good and healthy. But now the people that make the food are trying to cut corners and when you try to cut corners, you try to get the cheapest stuff whether it is good or bad. Now we have organic and healthy food but it is expensive at times to purchase it. So now that the economy is doing bad, everyone is trying to get the cheapest stuff and save themselves from becoming broke. But they must decide. If they get the cheap food it will feed them but hurt them in the long run. If they get the healthy food they spend more, get fewer groceries but live a healthier life. It 's kind of not fair . They should make healthy food at a decent price.

If there was a way to tell someone from the 1800s what we eat today, I wonder what their reaction would be? "You eat what?! And you don't even know what it is!?" Yeah...something like that.
