Flying Wireless Airlines...

I was contemplating the mass of spaghetti under and on my desk today when the thought occured to me. It had passed my mind before but this was the first time in a while that it had reappeared. The thought was, "Why don't we have wireless energy?".

The thought was obviously provoked by the mess of cords surrounding my computer. Nevertheless, it is a valid question? Why aren't people creating devices that use wireless energy. So you could plug in a device into your power source that converts the electricity to waves and sends it throught the air. Then your laptop or whatever could receive these waves and convert it back into electricity.

The idea even goes farther than that! If you can transport energy wirelessly, then you wouldn't need any power lines! Awesome! Have the powerplant just broadcast a certain wavelength and anyone who uses their power can have an account and a "receptor" at their house or building that converts the waves back into electricity. Think about all of the raw materials and space you could save by taking down all of the power lines and the structures holding them up. Of course, there would be no power outages because of a downed line or anything like that.

Let's take this even a step further. What about cars? If you have an electronic engine, you could receive waves from stations and power your car as you go. No stopping for gas! Now what about planes? I guess you could only use propellor planes because they can use an electronic engine, but imagine if you could keep a plane in flight as long as it was in range to receive waves from a station. There wouldn't be anymore planes running out of fuel two minutes before they can land. Sure propellors seem like they might be slow but with the right technology, they could be the cheapest way to fly. Airlines could construct massive, nice passenger planes to run on power received wirelessly from the ground!

Ok, basically, talking about this stuff gets me excited. Does anyone have any related ideas? Any knowledge about this, or... just any opinions about it? I think that it would be a huge step forward for communities to have this sort of technology around...
