Yeah, I had Mono. No, I Didn't Kiss Anyone

In high school, I was one of the unfortunate people to get mono, otherwise known as mononucleosis. Otherwise known as "The Kissing Virus". When I got it, I got nothing but grief from friends and acquaintances.

I was under the assumption that mono was a bad thing--which it is! In addition to feeling sick, your liver(I think it's the liver...) can actually get inflamed and any hard hits to the stomach could cause serious problems. I was told all this and I realized this was no laughing matter. However, I was not aware of mono's interesting history. Like the fact that most people get it from direct, personal contact with other people. Kissing for one.

So I told my friends I had mono, and what was the reaction I got? Laughter and "Who'd you kiss?!" I began to get really annoyed after the second or third accusation. I mean, isn't this serious? I can't go to gym class because my liver might 'splode, and all of you laugh at me?

But wrongful assumptions are so common, especially in high school. You can't say you're on birth control without someone thinking you're "active". As a guy, you can't like pink or dance because that would be gay. Girls are supposed to be girly and keep up with the latest styles...and the latest boyfriends. Our society is insane and that's where it's driving me.

I know I've said it before, but it's worth mentioning again. A high school English teacher once wrote the word "ASSUME" on the blackboard. He said when you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME. Wise words, I say.

Mono was hell! I had it really bad and could barely move for 3 months. I, like you, had all of the same accusations thrown at me. All of those people laughing while you're feeling miserable. Looking back I'm wondering why I didn't spit in all of their drinks to teach them a lesson! I guess I just wouldn't wish mono on anyone. It was very hard for me to recover. I even had to get my tonsils taken out because they got so infected.

I never had it but I am sure it sucked. My friend had it. I hate annoying people that do that. It's like SHUT UP. Jeez. You can get that from drinking after someone as well. You can get it from sharing someone's stuff and not washing your hands. I try to not assume things because it is not common to everyone.

This is why I can get germaphobic sometimes because it is like everything you touch could have some illness that you could catch.

Where you sick for a month? Because my friend was sick for like 4 months with it.

I felt sick for a week or more, then had two weeks off of gym class. I didn't have the worst case of it, but the accusations were enough!

I had mono is high school too. My jerk cross country coach was the worst about it. He insisted that I had kissed someone and he new who it was. I'm all about forgiveness, but that guy tested my limits. He only gave me a week off from practice too. Luckily, running isn't really a contact sport.

For me any sport is a contact sport. I trip over my feet sometimes. I find this quite amusing because I'm not so graceful. I have run into doors, tripped over random objects and fall alot. This is sober I might add.

A week? wtf.

I had bitter feelings toward my coach for a long time. I ended up having a serious back injury later that season and was never able to run competively after that.

I may write a post about it sometime soon.

I ran track and cross country for 13 years of my life, and I coached high school track for five years after that, so reading about your coach made me SO ANGRY! How did he think you would be any good to the team if you weren't given the time to get better? Basically, if someone get mono during the season, that is the end of the season. I'm not saying he should have given you the boot, but I'm saying he should have given you as much time as you needed to get healthy, and he should have relaxed his expectations of you when you came back. The main focus of a coach at the high school level should be the well-being and health of his/her athletes. I am so disgusted! Ptooey! (That was me spitting at the grou nd for emphasis).

There's a lot to the story, so to be fair, I'll post about it later.
