Something I've always struggled with is understanding why people get treated differently because of their physical condition. My girlfriend has a prosthetic leg. When she was 2 years old she was in a bad lawn mower accident (no joke). One thing I have honestly never even thought about was the fact that she had a prosthetic leg. Shes told me stories about how she hates people staring and treating her differently. Taking advantage of her because she has a prosthetic leg. I dont see her any different than anyone else. Honestly, I think she has sexy legs. I like her prosthetic leg and I dont find it the least bit discusting. I never have. Myranda (Thats my gf's name, telling you just so you dont get confused) has had to learn how to walk 9 different times. 9 DIFFERENT TIMES! Can you believe that? When she walks you can barely tell she even HAS a prosthetic leg.
I guess what I'm really trying to get to here is that I dont understand why people stare or why they find it different. Just because she'd handicapped doesnt make her any different than anyone else. She's not bitter toward anyone, shes a nice girl and the only reason I could understand any handicapped person being treated differently is if they were rude or mean or anything alone the lines of that. I mean I dont know what they've gone through and I may not understand it as much if I myself hadnt been in that situation but I probably know a little more than most 'Average Americans'.
What do you think?

It's pretty amazing. Though I can see why people would ask and so forth. It's often simply innocent curiousity, but handicapped people get so much shit about it that they can end up alienating people who just want to understand them better.
I've met a lot of handicapped people through Shriners and what not but they've all been really cool about it. I think that the only people that are actually bitter about being handicapped are ones that were treated just terrible. My gf was made fun of a lot but shes moved on. I think acceptance comes with age.
