What's so bad about feminism?

Kdragos's picture

Yesterday, I told my husband that I was interested in joining a Feminist Reading Group at school. He laughed at me and said, "I'm sure you can find something more interesting to do." This upset me a little. I think people hear the word feminism and immediately draw the conclusion that it's a bunch of women wanting to take over the world.
To me this is not the case at all. It's women fighting for their equal rights. Even today, women are paid less then men for doing the same jobs. They are punished for taking time out of their careers for having children and caring for loved ones. I'm not saying that women are better than men. I'm simply saying that women should be treated the same way as men.
Dating that philosophy got me in a lot of trouble. Men I've dated would say, "You women want to be indepedent but still be treated as special." To this I would respond with who doesn't want to be treated special sometimes? I certainly can't think of anyone, male or female, who wouldn't want some special attention from someone else. I guess I am just tired of being what society says I should be, simply because I'm a woman. I will be who I want to be... regardless of what everyone else says.

"Even today, women are paid less then men for doing the same jobs."

If that is true, wouldn't employers hire only women (to save on labor costs)?

NO... companies would not just solely hire women. Majority CEO's are still male dominant and do you actually think they would hire majority women? Then you have another form of discrimination on your plate. It's been proven and has publicized that women still make less doing the same job. The pay difference gap is slowly meshing but women still get paid less.

I know how you feel. I act like a guy half the time, especially when it comes to the way I sit. My grandmother once picked me up from work, and when she saw me sitting on a bench, sprawled out, in a skirt (it was long, so nothing was revealed), she said that it was nice how I'm "just as ladylike as the rest of the family." I brought this to my sister's attention, and she said, "Sadly, Uncle Irvin's the most ladylike of us all." If you knew him, you'd know how sad, but true that is.

My dad is against this type of thing too and it makes me feel horrible like he doesn't respect me at all. He says that we argue that we want to be paid as much as men, and be allowed to have the same jobs as men, but as soon as it comes to the draft, we wouldn't be the first ones in line to go fight. I'm not going to lie, no, I wouldn't, but at the same time, would he? Would most people? Essentially, he thinks that because we don't fight in war as much as men, we are inferior, and that disgusts me.

Your dad sounds like a prick.

i especially agree with the part about raising children. people think that if you are raising kids, then you dont have a real job, but that is not the case. I do not have kids yet, but i will take time to raisew them when i do. now,i wont quit my job or live like a hermit, but women should be givern credit for all that we do.

There's a divide among women themselves on whether it's better to be an at-home mother or a working mother. I don't mean just a difference in opinion but serious zealotry division that I've seen on TV with moms on shows implying that working moms don't raise their children properly and that at-home mothers are lazy. It's disheartening to see women tearing into each other over their own choices; perhaps it's injected self-prejudice from a society that has dictated social roles for women. To answer the question, there's nothing wrong with feminism it's just probably the stereotypical perceptions of extremism that provoke that response in some men and even some women.

That pisses me off!! There is nothing wrong with joining a femenist reading group...You are surrounded around women who are like you and maybe you can find a friend who has the same ideas as you! Look my husband is in the Union...Mostley all men except for ONE women! I'm sure they HAD to hire her because it was starting to look like a male cult!! And she is as burly as she can get...I'm not exagerating! I was so interested in what they talked about in those meetings! So I went! Oh I can not tell you the LOOKS I had...I sat in the back to listen when everybody stopped talking and turned around! O.K. I know I'm not in the union...but curiosity got the best of me! A few men had said " A women does not belong in these meetings! WHAT!! Unbelievable...My poor hubby turned and smiled at me and he came to walk me out! He knows me...I embarressed him infront of his union brothers but he told me he didn't care because he has to come home to me! HA..I laughed!! =0) Us women get flippin paid less than men...I want equal pay to what we are worth! I had a good paying job when I got pregnant...I was a manager at Sams Club..I couldn't pick heavy items up at 3 months and than had to be on bed rest! Do you know I was replaced! I worked for that company for almost 7 years! You would of thought I was abled to get my job back after I had my daughter! We are women who have children...So equal rights is out of the question! But if the rules are bent a little for us because we can not predict if we are going to be sick with pregnancy or not...That will be great! Our bodies do more than there's so we need more! I'm a hard ars when it comes to getting respect...I give respect....i expect it in return...Case closed!! And another thing...I hope you joined the femenist group! Men have there unions, Lions, Elk, and moose clubs ( I know for a fact you've got to be a man to join the moose club...Uhh ) we can atleast have something for us besides quilting and wearing red hats! So you go girl..Do what is right for you and no one else!!

Women are just as good at anything as men are!!!! We can do everything a man can do, from carpentry to cleaning. Men have 2 get over the macho acts and realize it!!!! The only thing that we do different is pee sitting down!!!!

There is no difference that I have ever seen in pay. What I have seen is men hire one woman over the other because one was hotter. I think that is crap personally.
