As my first act....

Hey everybody out their in cyberland, I'm SC_Dem08, showing that yes South Carolina actually does hold some Democrats, shocking yeah. Believe me, we are few an fair between, unfortunately for me. Anyways I'm seventeen, almost 18 years old and for my first official blog I thought it was only appropriate to have a little chat on well College. Let's face it for kids my age it's the most important thing worth talking about, even though there's an election and a war and what not going on outside, but we must get and education so it's all about scholarships and loans and whatever else people can scrunge up to pay the massive fees on college.

In South Carolina there are three or four major colleges that people can go to, I'm gonna talk about the fees for the two that are on the lips of all my friends. University of South Carolina and College of Charleston . At University of South Carolina the tuition is only $8,436, but once you add up the room and board, the book fees and possible personal expenses, the total ends up being well over $19,000! And that doesn't include class fees people! At college of Charleston, their in-state tuition is $7,776, but with the room and board and other crazy expenses (because believe me, living in downtown Charleston is no joke) the total a incoming Freshman will spend is close to $20,000! And people that is just IN-STATE tuition! If you want to go out of state for college, you better have some major scholarships or major money sources because I don't know anyone who can just fork over that kind of money for college. And that $19,000-$20,000 that you are going to spend is only for ONE year of schooling. At that rate most students who go to a school for the all four years stand it be in about $80,000 dollars worth of debt before they even get a real job!

So this honestly begs the question, who are we expected to pay for all of this? I mean those of us who don't have parents with fortune 500 companies or insane smarts or wicked amazing sports skills. Well as I'm browsing through scholarship websites, it truly looks like I'm going to be in debt for the rest of my life because of college. If I even get to make it through college. My friends and myself already know that we will have to get jobs to help so we can eat (even if our tuition is already covered) and that we'll possibly have to partake in some work study program to help pay for the classes we have and what. So where is there really time to study? I mean honestly. Between classes, work, and the possibility of a second job? It's becoming slightly ridiculous for us 'normal' people to get a higher education. One that we desperately need.

So if getting a college education is so important to the national economy and the general well-being of people in America, why are they making it so hard for people to go and further their education? And why is the government not doing anything to help it? This is not just a few kids who want to better themselves, this a whole generation who needs to learn more. We are the people who are going to be leading this country in the next 20 to 30 years. We are the people sitting in the elected offices and the classrooms around the country. The ones on the police force and putting out the fires. The ones running those major companies and being responsible for the livelihoods of thousands of people! So I ask you once more, why is it so hard to get an education for us? The general ignorance to the in-coming adults can not be ignored and it will not go away. Because if we can't get a good education now, there is no hope for our future. And not just the future of the uneducated masses, but the country as well. We need to start preparing for the future now!

college is a business, there to make money. just like us going to college really. to beable to live how we want to live. just have to hope that the end justifies the means. its shitty though. my major is only found in private schools so thats like 35+ a year.....

yeah I understand. I just makes no sense perpetuating the problem instead of trying to fix it. But like my english teacher says, the College Board is like the mob. I'm sorry about your major, by the way, it sucks, I'm lucky, most major schools do journalism so I don't have to worry about going to a private college.
