Homework, Homework, Homework

Homework, homework, homework. Probably the worst enemy I’ve ever had. In fact, I should probably be working on some homework right now. Then again, I only have to do a packet for math, a packet for econ, study for psych, and read a 400 page book for English- plus write an essay on it.

So why do teachers insist on handing out so much homework? I can understand a couple of practice math problems to review the lesson from class, or even a couple of questions to review an Econ chapter. But are hours and hours of busy work really worth it. FACE IT PEOPLE!!! We obviously aren’t going to remember most of the things we learn when we get older anyway. And no matter what any teacher tells me, I am never going to need to know how many cows are produced in Qatar. Granted this may be the million dollar question on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire one day; however, I doubt it. Call me a pessimist, but the 20 page essay/project I did on that country was a complete waste.

I currently work at a law office and one of the lawyers there has told me more than once that the only thing she remembers from her Physics class is a lesson the teacher taught on the gravity of tires and which way to turn the wheel when they begin to act up in snow, etc. WELL DUH!!! That is because that is actually something that she needed to use in life. When I asked her, along with 3 other lawyers and a secretary, if they could help me with my log problems for math, they all laughed and started telling me how they remember learning about logs when they were in high school, hating it, complaining to the teacher they would never need to use it in real life, and then proving their point to me right then and there.

So yes, it is frustrating to know that a lot of the work we do in school is simply completed in order to prove our hard work ethic and memorization skills simply to move on to college and then to our career. Maybe its just me, but I think its sad really that we have to go through all this just to prove our “intelligence”. Well that’s enough homework talk for now….stay tuned for part 2 =)

YES! Logs! That's what I'm knawing my brain out with now! Right now, I have three Math teachers, two English, two Chemistry, a General Studies, and two Psychology. Plus one for Sports Coaching. I have, out of that, four pieces of homework for Math, two for Psych, three essays and a final draft for English, research for Coaching, and three for Chemistry. PLUS I have exams next week! Apparently, I'm supposed to finish all of this in a week, plus get in exercise to stay fit for coaching, and study to keep up my high grades, and catch up all the work I missed after being in hospital for an emergency for a week.

You see, I also wouldn't mind any of this... if I ever needed to know it! But when am I ever going to know the second integral, or regression lines, or just why that needs to be there for this reaction that only ever happens under these conditions...

I know I chose the subjects, so I shouldn't complain, but this is aboslutely insane. I think the amount of stress we have from the homework is detrimental to our overall performance. We should start a petition...

I love homework! It's so much more fun than class.

Did you learn anything about the country's culture in your report? I bet you learned how to conduct research, manage your time, manage a project in general, writing skills, logic skills, cultural differences, communication skills, economics, and many other things while writing your report.

The math problems, however, are probably useless.
