I work for a contractor is SW Florida. When I first took this job two years ago, I had worked in a completely different field, and I was worried about going to work for a contractor. I had plenty of dealings with contractors in the past, and I couldn't think of one of them that didn't come across as "shady" or just plain unfair to customers. I decided to take the job, and much to my delight, I came to work for one of the few contractors that was willing to do whatever it takes to do the right thing. We would do the right thing even if it meant losing the job because of price due to the fact that the other guys are installing illegal equipment and will require more money later to make it right. Maybe i'm just going to be the one to take the high road, but why can't people just show some common decency to each other and not be out to screw everyone they come in contact with. Has the world gotten so bad that a person has to be sneaky to make a living? I do just fine without it, so I'm going to have to say no!

Good for you! It's cool that you're going out of your way to do the right thing, and defy the "shady" practices of your field of work. I wish more people would do that.
Hopefully, it will pay off for you, and people will recommend you / be return customers. Who knows, maybe you could go indpendent someday, and be your boss. Good luck!

I agree. My dad is an architect, so I know plenty about contractors who do anything that they can to screw over the customer.
At the same time, the whole "illegal equipment" thing is slightly annoying. A lot of the things that are against building code aren't necessarily dangerous; it's just that one time one thing wrong with one piece of equipment, and since lawmakers rarely understand anything past reactionary legislation and public opinion, they enact laws which only make things unnecessarily difficult.
