Do violent video games cause people to become violent?

There is a on going debate on weather or not violent video games cause people to become violent. In my opinion violent video games do not make people become violent, it is the persons choice to act out things they have seen or done in video games so the game's developers shouldn't be blamed for others actions. I play video games that have violence but i dont go around steeling cars and killing people. There is alot of violence in the media such as television shows , Movies and music, but why do video games get most of the blame for violent acts? I believe its up to parents to keep their children away from violence and others to tell the difference between real and fake.

One of my friends made the point...

"Gun don't kill people. People kill people using guns." I think this goes for video games, too. I have personally played tons of video games since a very young age, and I don't have violent tendencies. So I agree with you.

If there is a psycho out there playing a video game, he will probably imitate the actions in the game.

The "psycho"-a misleading generalization at best- will be prone to violence with or without video games. THe question is whether video games actually create more violence than there would be without them. Somebody with trouble parsing reality from fantasy is quite likely going to turn to violence eventually, especially if some kind of trauma occurs. Someone with a good grasp on what is real and what is not will process trauma in a healthy way and easily grasp that beating a polygon representation of a man is much different from beating a flesh and bone man.

If anything games may inspire a certain style of violence, much like "Clockwork Orange" did in England, but won't inspire non-violent people to violence. It simply shows violent people a template and stylization to place on top of their violence.

Violent games have maturity levels. Even though a game may say mature there might be a 13 year old who can handle playing the game without being confused from right and wrong. There could also be a 25 year old who can't handle the game.

Maturity knows no age.

Violent games don't causes or make people do violent things. Its entirely the persons choice. Plus the everyone has games in their house and can just be considered a coincidence. I work at a major retailer and they make us card anyone that looks under the age of thirty for a M rated game that is required 17+years old. They are very strict about it because we have secret shoppers just for the soul purpose of buying a M rated game to test my co-workers and I. If the person is not carded and they are a secret shopper the person that rang them up gets fired immediately.

to be honest you have to ask someone who bacame a violent person through video games(pass the part learinging from it and grew up from the experience)opinion... i for one am glad i havent become one...
it also depends if there is something wrong with that person in the head to before the video games andmaking accusations.

a controlled experiment would be nice in my opinion but im sure they dont do testing video game testing on humans or animals...

I agree. I play games where I have to shoot people, I don't plan on going out and shooting someone, also a lot of movies I watch is about about people getting shot. It's not the movies, the game, or the music, it's the person. It's who they are and how their parents brought them up. The games to make the choice for them, they make the choice. My friends play violent games, they aren't planning on killing anyone anytime soon. I agree that the games are not the responsible factor.

As we grow older, our brains mature to the natural adult level where we can usually make smarter, more well thought through decisions. Now this isnt always the case, but most doctors agree that between 17-20 our brains finish development. Now, if the violent video games, most of which are M +17 (take note of the 17 years old part of the rating), it is probable that anyone who legally purchases that game has a developed brain and can make rational decisions. My theory is that if the controversial rating system were strictly upheld, those younger than 17 wouldn't be introduced to the violence and wouldn't be threatened by making an irrational decision and killing someone with a gun.

against the "video games cause violence" argument has always been that Hitler didn't have an X-box, bin Laden doesn't play Grand Theft Auto, and Pol Pot never had a chance to buy Halo
There are alot of factors which contribute to youth violence, and video games make an easy scape goat
