For Evangeline
-The Julianna Theory
In one night, you made me your own,
In one night, you made me your own,
In one night, you made me your own,
In one night, you made me your own.
The deepest embrace is creation,
In one night.
The deepest embrace is creation,
In one night.
The deepest embrace is creation,
In one night.
I laid there for days and you forgot
I laid there for days and you forgot,
I laid there for days and you forgot,
I laid there for days and you forgot,
In one night, you made me your own,
In one hour you gave me away to the angels
In one night, you made me your own,
In one hour you gave me away
In one night, you made me your own,
In one hour you gave me away
You gave me up to the sky
You gave me up to the angels;
You sent me up to the sky,
Now the wings fan the heat from the face you’ll never touch, the hair you’ll never smell, the little hands you’ll never hold
Now I am just a silhouette down there,
now I am just a silhouette down there
now I am just a silhouette down there
now I am just a silhouette down there
now I am just a silhouette down there
now I am just a silhouette down there
now I am just a silhouette down there
now I am just a silhouette down there
now I am just a silhouette down there

This is a song about abortion. It is sung from the point of view of the child who was aborted. “In one night, you made me your own.” This is referring to when he was conceived. In just one night, a couple created life. They “embraced creation.” But perhaps the mother did not know that she had a baby growing inside of her. He “laid there for days and [she] forgot.” She most likely went on with her life for a few moments, until she became aware that her period was late. Then, in “one hour, [she] gave [him] away to the angels.” The child goes on to tell her about what she missed out by this choice, “hair [she’ll] never smell, little hands [she’ll] never hold.”
When I first heard this song, I cried. It was so sad to imagine a baby boy or girl, singing to their mother about the life they lost. Pictures of orphans came to mind, who never knew their parents. In that sense, isn’t adoption almost as bad? A kid waiting in limbo, or adoption centers, lonely without his mother, hoping that a family might choose him. It’s heartbreaking to imagine.
This song obviously is referring to the Modern Problem of abortion. It was most likely written from the standpoint of a “pro-lifer.” It is very persuading; teaching listeners about the pain a child must go through. But how do we know what the child thinks? I assume they go to heaven, are they angry with their mother? Do the babies look down with hurt and sadness? Or do they understand the mother believed it was for the best, and wanted to save her child from herself – a girl who made an accident and might hate its consequence, constantly reminding her? (the consequence being a baby)

I don't think their brains are developed enough to comprehend much, so I think they're cool with it - no worries.
