Can Kids afford to be Sick?

It is my belief that there is just no room for kids to be sick anymore. If I miss but one day of school I am return the following day and have so much homework that I have to stay up until 1 in the morning trying to finish even though I am still sick. It makes me infuriated to think that we cannot miss more than one day without failing class. One week I was really sick and did not want to go to school, so I missed a day. I had only gotten worse by the next day, so I stayed home a second day. That night I got a call from my friend informing me of my workload once I returned. I couldn’t believe it. I had three tests to make up, a project to start, a book that I was now three chapters behind in, a paper due in two days, plus all of the notes and other little assignments of every day activity. My mind was blown. So, the next day I returned to school and still felt sick and weak, but I knew I had no other choice.

And this coming year I had hoped to go to Honduras for a church mission, but I would have to miss over a week of school. That is like school suicide. I cannot fulfill a moral obligation because my schedule is too rigorous. I think that it is a grave injustice.

Does anyone else agree?

ive probably missed five days of school in the last seven years of school. i missed most of the days because of field trips and the doctors. ive stayed home once because of being sick. i hate missing school. i cant accept anything from myself besides A+s. so missing school is deadly for me. for others...they are different. maybe they dont care for grades... peace

I agree with you. Right now I have a really bad cold and am forcing myself to go to class. Since I missed a day of class last week and am still busy making up that material, I can't afford to miss today. Now, a really bad cold isn't a huge deal and I'll survive, but what really sucks is when I have a migraine or something of the sort.

I'm a senior in high school. Just this year my school has developed a policy where if you miss 10 days of school, excused or not, after the 10th day you have to have a doctor's note each time. One week I was very, very sick. I had a lot of work to make up, but my teachers were very understanding. It was the attendance office that wasn't understanding. They were immediately on my case about getting a doctor's note because I had missed a few days of school before then for being sick on other days. As much as I think it is a good policy for students who purposely miss days, it is unfair for good students who come to school as much as possible and only miss school because they are truly sick. It's terrible how the school system is about absences, but I guess we have the students who miss school on purpose to blame for that. They are the reason we get no sympathy when we miss school.

I missed 11 days of school last year. I had strep throat and had to miss and entire week. My counselor was 'worried' about me and called me into her office. She then noticed that I still had all A's and though I kept getting calls and letters from the attendance office I still had all A's. It is ridiculous.

I hate how we cant miss a single day of school. I ot d's in two classes one year becuase I was really sick one week and missed a week. I have to think all the time am I sick enough to fail? Its not right and its not fair schools need to ease up a little and realize that its impossible not to get sick in school. Hundreds of kids all in close quarters, its bound to happen!
