Australia Plans to Remove Troops from Iraq!

New Prime Minister for Australia, Kevin Rudd, presented himself to voters as a "new generation leader who promises to remove troops from Iraq." No one of certain of when this promised withdrawal is to take place, but he spoke with President Bush about the continued need for support from the United States in Australia's foreign policy.

If the removal of Australian troops is an immediate action, this will leave American and other troops more vulnerable because there will be 500 less soldiers in Iraq. It should be considered that if Australia really wants to have United States support and alliance, it may be unwise to abruptly remove their troops from Iraqui soil. My cousin Sam is in Iraq right now and to think that he would not have as much support from other international troops is a bit foreboding.

What are your thoughts? Do you think that Australia should pull out or remain in alliance with United States soldiers in Iraq? Do you think that if Australia pulls out, it will create tension between Australia and the United States? Let me know what you think!

I don't think Australia should pull out of the war because from reading this blog, it sounds like Australia wants to give up on the war.

It is tough to guess their motives for pulling out but I loved what Jsai had to say below. It is their decision whether they stay or go. The United States will have to then make a decision as to send more troops over if the Austrailian troops withdraw or start bringing them all home.

I think that it is up to the Australians. The people of Australia have put an anti-war Prime Minister in power. The obvious reason for that is that they want to withdraw. It is up to them if they want to do that.
I think that our government should just accept that. They gave us the ammount of help that they were willing to give us and now they are going to stop. If we feel this loss of 500 troops puts us in danger, I'm sure we'll send some more of our own troops to replace them, as our government remains willing to fight this war.

A very practical and straight-forward response. All of your points were well-taken, unbiased, and clear-cut.

Why, thank you. It's still nice to agree, expecially when I get more points out of it. :-)

The Australians are pulling out because their Prime Minister was ousted and there's a new, more liberal one in place. Also, they are now signing the Kyoto pronciples, leaving the US the only industrialized country not to sign it. The US is becoming more and more alone in its goals. BTW, I only know this because we talked about it in one of my classes today. So, this is a nice tie in for me.
