The football team has staph. Not every player but about half. One kid said they had no idea what it was but they called it "arm cancer." It frist started out as little soars on their arms and they all thought it was weird. One of the kids has it on his arms and also on his legs. Naturally the team blames him for starting it. And I don't blame them for blaming him. This is the same infection that just killed a high school football player in Virginia. I'm scared. I'm surrounded by these people all day. One of the kids is even in my group in my foods class. They all say that they have gone to the doctors and that they are no longer contagious and are taking anitbiotics. But that does not seem to passify me.
The football players that I have talked to said it was started by a player who never washed his pads (sick!). They contracted the disease by just doing their normal practice. The disease can be spread with just normal human skin to skin contact. I think that's what is so scary. Also, if the disease spreads to enough teams and begins to get out of control, the rest of the football season will be cancelled so this problem can be taken care of.
Just thinking about this makes me want to shower, over and over and over and over again. I'm not sure how to completely prevent it because one isn't sure if a person has the infection. This to me just sounds like a mini plauge that is spreading across the nation. I don't believe it to be THAT serious since it is treatable but I think it is scary that it is spreading so easily from school to school.
Has anybody else experienced this at their school?

We had a few caes of it at my high school last year, and it was mainly going around the athletes (it was in the gym). The school did a major cleaning of all athletic areas, equipment, and made sure all players were not infected or treated. As long as the school is taking precautions to try and prevent the spread, and you are careful who you come in close physical contact with, you should be safe. To take extra precautions, maybe wear pants inatead of shorts to gym and wash your hands after handling equipment and other people's stuff.
yeah the only thing that reassures me is that the school has recognized it as being a problem and that all of the athletes that have it have already taken the necessary steps to keep it from spreading. I also don't take PE anymore and so that's awesome too.
I'm probably worrying a bit too much about the problem since I don't come in contact with people that have it a lot, but I'm a worrier.

No I haven't heard of it here but sure sounds gross! I am a freak about nasty diseases and viruses! I don't want my daughter being as young as she is catching anything like this from me so I always wash my hands and wipe down everything I'm going to touch in my office and stuff...
