The Oscars were interesting last night, weren't they?
Some of the winners disappointed me, others made me shout victoriously. As I cheered for Juno's "best screenplay" win, I began to ponder. What is it all about? Not in the gigantic existentialist manner (we'll get to that later) why do we have these awards ceremonies? It seems like we barely finished the Golden Globes, Emmys, Grammies, SAGs, Tonys, and we get hit with another awards show where we gawk at people's overpriced dresses and applaud things we think to be quality entertainment.
Why are these awards only in the entertainment industry? What do lumberjacks win for doing an exceptional job?
One must stop and think on the "important" awards, like the Nobel Peace Prize. There's not a whole lot of pomp and circumstance about that award. You don't see any ball gowns, there's no E! news coverage, you just kinda read about it in the paper and go "Hmmm, that's nice, good job Al Gore, enjoy your million dollars"
I just think maybe we should extend the horizons of our "big awards shows" to cover not only that which entertains( don't get me wrong, I have a Tony awards party planned for June) but also for that which enhances our lives and our world (anyone up for a Nobel '08 rave?)
Think of Meryl Streep
