HOPE IS A THING WITH FEATHERS

By Emily Dickinson

Hope is a thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings a tune without words
And never stops at all.

And sweetest, in the gale, is heard
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That keeps so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea
Yet, never, in extremity
It ask a crumb of me.

I really am convinced that my English teacher is crazy but she does have a good heart.  We were doing this poem in class and she decided that we were all going to make hope birds and send them to a place of out choice.  Then while discussing it, someone suggested that since many of us student teach, we could have our kids make birds themselves.  It was lovely.  The children loved it and were so excited.  Some kids made two birds and kept one to send hope to someone that they know.  Then yesterday we sent our birds out to be mailed.  We walked around the school reciting the poem and spent an entire period doing this.  And keep in mind that we have an AP test to take in about a month.  This should be interesting.

That sounds like something I would like to do. Sometimes the brain just needs a different way to think or a break so that it can work better. I'm sure that you will be fine on your AP test and now your brain can be relaxed and happy, even you felt weird doing the exercise.

Just make sure they don't have the avian flu lol

That poem carries a message stronger than the words used to create it. Hope does indeed go on forever--and it sounds like your english teacher knew what she wanted to pass on and achieved that goal.

Your English teacher sounds like she's got a great heart. The little birds also sound very cute, heh.

Good luck on your AP test!
