Let's Sue Myspace! Woot!

Hi! My name is Kati and I am a Myspace addict! Yes, it's true.. I use myspace on a regular basis. I have only people on my profile that I personally know.. most of which is old friends from high school and family. I use the site to update everyone at once on my daughter and special events. All of my photos are private for my friends only.. you can't even message me without being my friend anymore!

How about all these lawsuits against Myspace?! Man, myspace was created to be a social networking site, but teens of this generation have really taken it to a whole new level.

I was reading an article about a 14 year old who sued myspace alleging that she was sexually assultedby another user. She claims that this young man lied claiming to be a high school senior on the football team and tricked her into giving him her phone number. The young girl's lawyer says that,  “absolutely no meaningful protections or security measures to protect underage users.” She was seeking $30 million dollars!

What?!

This reminds me of the lady that sued McDonalds because her coffee was hot and it burned her! Well, duh?!

So, this young girl exploits herself on myspace, gives her phone number to a guy she doesn't know, and they when everything gets over her head she cries foul play to make sure she gets none of the blame. In my opinion, this is an parenting issue. Parents need to teach and monitor their children better.. it's as simple as that.  Or maybe.. they just wanted the money... you know some people will do anything to make some quick cash.

Either way, the lawsuit was dismissed.

The U.S. is sue-crazy! I absolutely agree with you that people are a little out of control when it comes to the legal system. I also agree that parents need to be spending more time with their children, and know what they are really doing online.

I agree with you. I'll admit that I have a myspace account, however all of my friends are people that I know personally. I would also never give out any personal information about myself (like my phone number) over the internet because not only can the person that's acting like a teenager get it, but so can many others. There are so many things that can go wrong with that, I don't understand why she did it in the first place. Yes, the U.S. is sue crazy, there is practilly any reason a person can come up with to sue a person for, just to make a few extra bucks.

I agree that the parents should take better actions in knowing what kids are doing online. The dangers of strangers in the real world are becoming ever more popular online. It is a disgrace that people are not taking more responsibility for their own actions (or lack there of).

I have a MySpace account, as well, and I even have people on my friend's list that I have never met personally, but still, I don't give out my personal information over the internet. You're right....this IS a parenting issue. Then again, there are lots of lawsuits like this that arise simply because something happens to the children while the parents are too busy doing anything but being parents! Where were her parents while she was being "tricked" by this person? Where were they when the alleged assault was taking place? What was so important in the parents' lives that they were overlooking what was going on in hers?

There was also a woman who sued McDonald's when a hot pickle fell from her cheeseburger and onto her chin. Her husband, in turn, sued McDonald's because he was deprived of sexual gratification due to the "loss of his wife's services." How grotesque was that lawsuit?
