I was listening to the radio, and they were talking about these bullet proof backpacks that this guy is making and selling for 175 dollars. He sayd that he got the idea from the Colombine shootings, and people actually pay for them. There were alot of things that struck my mind when i heard this.
the first one was who in their right mind would spend that much money on a backpack that wouldnt really help you if you were in danger. it is ridiculous and useless, unless someone hits you from behind and you are wearing your backpack and the shooter chooses to shoot the backpack portion of you.
Also, why would you buy your kid a bullet proof backpack because if you do, you are telling your kid that they are not safe in school and need protection. If i were a kid and my parent wanted me to wear a bullet proof backpack top school, id be to scared to go to school.
Another reason is that i find it apalling that someone looked at the tragedy of the Colombine shootings and thought "Hey, i can make money by using the kids that got shot as advertising of why people should by my product. Ill be Rich!!" Why someone could get past tragedy and be able to do this, say that he was inspired by the shooting, and then live with himself, i do not know. I realize that they could be of use maybe, but not really.
Lastly, what socierty do we live in where we need to send our kids to school with bullet proof anything! this is america and we are supposed to provide our kids with a safe home and school life. we need to protect the schools against any bullets by offering protection. WE need to teach our kids to be nice to people who are different, because for the most part, the people who shoot other students at school were picked on. We also need to offer help to people who are picked on to prevent them from becoming hostile. the school system is guilty of not caring about individual students unless they are the validictorian or captain of the football team. we need to give individual attention to all students by hiring better teachers, or persuade existing teachers to do better by paying them more. our society is in an extreme state of decay and unless we make extra effort, it will not be soon before people start making bullet proof body suits and selling them to worried parents.

Welcome to Americia. It's really sad.
That is really ridiculous! That doesn't have any use at all, and you make some very good points. Yes, I think the solution is to have more of those programs that teach kids not to be bullies... but they need to start earlier, and offer grades so that more children will pay attention. No one is making any effort to keep children emotionally healthy anymore, and then we wonder why there is so much youth crime.
exactly. soime people say that it is the shooters fault entirely, and it is their fault that they chose to handle their stress that way, but it starts way before it comes to that and we need to recognize it before it becomes an issue
The thought that a person looked at columbine and is trying to profit off of it is disturbing. However, that person could have good intentions and falls under the misfortune of seeming like he/she wants to make profit.
When the backpack came out, CNN had a report not too long after the fact and a parent said that he would buy it for his children because, he said, anything can happen nowadays. He felt more comfortable knowing that his children had the backpack as protection opposed to nothing. This is a reasoning that is probably paralleled by parents who choose to purchase the backpack for their children.
The bag is expensive, but the material is made of bulletproof material--which is more expensive than the mundane material backpacks are usually made off. For this, the backpack has a higher price.
America is a wonderful country, everyone who lives here is extrememly lucky to live in a free country with the resources and blessings we have. Anything can happen anywhere, and all people can do is prepare themselves--regardless of upbringings, social responsibilities or anything that can make a person the way they are--remains the constant that anything can happen.
yeah, i agree, which is why i put some of those points in my blog, but i think that the fact that you need to protect your kids from something like that is terrible.
