When Religion Hurts

The purpose of this blog is to discuss how religion keeps many women in dangerous abusive marriages. There are lots of religious women all over the world who refuse to leave their abusive husbands because their religion says its a sin to get a divorce. Many of them say that their abuse is their "cross to bear" and that its worth it to secure their place in heaven. I find this notion very disturbing, to believe that its better to suffer they way many women do and to put their children in that kind of situation because of their faith amazes me. I can't believe that there is any God or religion worth worshipping or believing in that would expect a disciple to put themselves and their children in harms way. I know that the simple answer to this is that its the womens fault, they obviously just misinterpreted God's plan for them or whatever, but the most disturbing thing about this is that many churches and relgious leaders in all faiths support this idea, in some religions divorce is only granted if the man allows it, in Christianity there are lots of preachers out there counseling abused women, telling them to pray and forgive and give their husbands another chance and that it will get better because God will show them the way. Women are strongly urged to keep the family together. Not all churches are like this but many are, even when theirs proof of the abuse some women have had their religious leaders talk them into staying in the marriage. This is incredibly naive to me, to think that a religious leader would advise a member of their congregation to stay in an abusive relationship. How do you all feel about this? Do you think its justified? Do you think religious leaders have the right to counsel abuse victims to stay in the marriage because divorce is a sin?

The problem is in the church not the women. The Vatican and most religions are old and don't update well. They are all stuck in the past and only recently started scrambling forward to the present. Most religons still say women are inferior for instance. The problem is their are too many old coots trying to make things stay they were when they were young, we need a progressive approach in religion.

If thats true then isn't the problem in religion itself? I mean those were the words written, those were the ideas presented? If religion is to be believed in and followed should it ever be changed, isn't that just creating your own religion? Just wondering?
