One word seems to stand out to me whenever I hear the phrase illegal immigrant and that's ILLEGAL! I personally have no problem with people migrating to America because I know that that's what this country was built upon. Though my ancestors didn't migrate hear willingly, that's another blog. I am not however for any illegal person living here...period. I believe that there is a system in place in the US that is very trying and can be very expensive but it should be adhered to none the less. There are immigrants that come from all over Haiti, Cuba, France, all parts of Asia and they go through hell to become legal citizens or get deported. I don't think that because you can hop a fence into a country you should be able to stay and enjoy the rights and priveleges of actual citizens that pay into the system. And I am sorry but this is an english speaking country. I could not migrate to France( legally or illegally) and demand that they speak english. I would have to learn the language and If I wanted to live there wouldn't I want to learn the language anyway? I see more and more job listings in all fields of work saying Bi-lingual or Bi-lingual a plus and it makes my stomach churn. Because I am willing to bet my life that if a few million Americans migrated to mexico we would have to learn the language. My mom is a hospital administrator at a private hospital in La and she recently was told by a spanish family that she needed to learn spanish after they had to use a translator to discuss the issues regarding there family member who was a patient. We had a good laugh about that, but in all actuality it wasn't funny. The illegal issue is yet again another issue that's about money. Business owners want cheap labor and illegals will work for anything and they'll work hard too. But it cuts both ways because I used to work in the restaraunt industry and I witnessed illegals being exploited and working long hours for nothing but they were so desperate for money they did it. The illegal issue is also effecting hospitals. ER'S are being used as doctor offices by illegals and when you have no social security number on file and you get a large medical bill that doesn't get paid because all you have is an address that may or may not be current that leaves it on the shoulders of the legal citizens. And what's with marching in downtown La with upside down American flags? I have no comment on that because I didn't understand it. The only right that an illegal should have in this country is the right to become a legal citizen. Complete the process like so many countless others have and enjoy your legal right to all the priveleges and responsibilities that come along with being an American citizen.
The illegal issue

It does not matter where a person was born they are just as human.
It has never been unknown that millions of people just south of the US border are living in poverty. The fact that those of them with the daring, initiative, and ambition to cross that border would do so is also not a suprise. America has not had the will to stop them. Even a common sence solution like building a fence has failed to get enough support to pass.
Now they are here. Those poor people would have never gotten legal permission to enter the US. The question before us is what to do with them. The majority of the 'illegals' work hard (they may not pay taxes, because they are forced into the underground economy) and support themselves. They do add to the burden on social welfare programs, but are you advocating allowing them to starve, or bleed to death if they need help? Should we round them up and deport them?
I think we need young workers and taxpayers in this country. Yesterday the first baby boomer filed for social security. The medicare/medicaid burden is going to see a very predictable increase in the coming years. G. W. Bush has done quite a few foolish things in the past 7 years, but his time as Texas governer has given him a better insight here than most people. Allowing a pathway to legality for these residents of the US is a common sence solution to the present situation that would benefit everyone.
I agree with you that requirement to speak english, and show knowledge and respect for US history and culture should be a prerequisit for citizenship. Offering a way to register as a resident alien, and start paying payroll taxes shouldn't be delayed. Increasing border security is a no brainer either way.
A fact is always better than an ideal
Why bilingual job requirements make your stomach "chum"?
