For those of you who haven't heard, the makers of Grand Theft Auto are getting sued.
The reason they are getting sued:
Two boys, ages 14 and 16, took a .22 rifle to a wooded hill overlooking a freeway.
They proceeded to open fire on traffic, killing one man and seriously injuring another.
The boys said they were mimicking the game Grand Theft Auto.
And so, a lawsuit for 100 million dollars. Which could go class-action.
I don't know your experience with the game, but I own it. Two versions, for ps2. I enjoy playing it, and thus far have killed some 2,000 pixelated figures in Vice City.
My kill record in GTA 3 is higher than the annual death rate for the U.S.
So I have pretty much reached the point at which desensitization would have occurred several times over.
Amazingly enough, I haven't yet killed anyone. Or thought about it. Or become violent in any way. Or changed in any way.
So what exactly was wrong with these two boys? I was about that age when I started playing. There seems to be a slight difference in the way we reacted to the game.
Of course, they could be totally lying little serial killers. You never know.
I realize that when a loved one has died, it is comforting to have somebody to blame. Or in this case sue the pants off of. And it's hard to stay mad at a kid. It doesn't look good to the public. Evil though the kid may be.
But really, how much of the blame can be placed on the video game? It's a game. An extremely violent game,no doubt, but not intended as anything more.
You'll always get a few nut jobs who react this way. After The Matrix was released, some hick killed himself and his family in order to "free them from the Matrix".
No offense, but people are idiots.
Individual persons are often not. But people as a whole are totally stupid.
So, can we please accept that a few unbalanced humanoid jackals are going to do stuff like this, and stop blaming the entertainers? Blame the damned parents. It's easier, and they were the ones (I assume) who let the kids get at a gun.
Alternatively, could we just censor entertainment and get it over with? I'm just tired of all the debate over what seems to me to be the wrong issue.
People are contesting whether or not entertainment like this should be allowed because it triggers unbalanced people to do violent things.
Here's a thought - let's try and fix whatever is making these "people" unbalanced in the first place? Would that be good?
Oh, and happy thanksgiving. For those of you still on vacation, have a fun drive home. Try not to duck every time you see a shadow move on a hill, eh?
Yeah, this is what happens when I post at 3 in the morning. Good night

Violent people buy violent video games, violent video games don't make people violent. Our society is always putting the cart before the horse.
