Assault rifles are no longer illegal in the United States. Who in the world needs an automatic weapon or assault rifle? What are you going to do with that? The only use of these in the country have been in mass shootings or robbings. So why are they legal? Why has Congress been unable to put the law back into effect?
Does it go against the Second Ammendment? Who cares? Sorry to diss the Constitution, but that ammendment was put into effect more than 200 years ago in a different time with different issues (like the effects of abuse by British soldiers, no longer an issue obviously). Automatic weapons weren't even available in the 18th century so the ammendment looks even less relevant.
Self defense? Who needs an assault rifle to defend themselves? Who are you defending yourself from, the military? I generally don't agree with guns in general, but I can see a small handgun as self defense as more reasonable then an Uzi.

I'm guessing the whole part about why the amendment was put into affect was taught to you wrongly in school. The amendment is put into affect so that the populus can defend themselves against the government if the government gets to big for it's pants and starts to kill people and do things against the Constitiution. Gee, sounds like this has been happening a lot the past 2 decades. Might as well say the whole constitution is irrelevant, I guess you are happy with the Patriot Act and the government walking all over and destroying our rights.
I am not for the government "destroying our rights", but when have we had to defend ourselves against the government using guns? Provided you haven't done anything illegal, there is no reason why the goverment should be launching a military operation on your home. Recall that this is the United States, our rights of protection against government aggression are protected. And really, what is the likelihood of having to defend your home using assault rifles? If it gets that intense that you have likely done something wrong.
Tell that to the Branch Davidians, Ruby Creek and all other groups.
So what? This is the United States, home of the Patriot Act, which squashes most of our rights by the way.
"Recall that this is the United States, our rights of protection against government aggression are protected."
Yes I recall. Our rights of protection against government aggression include the second amendment.
I still find it funny that the school system taught that the reason for the second amendment was because of the British.
Last time I checked, I couldn't just head to the gun shop and buy a fully automatic firearm.
I think the majority of Americans are ill-equipped when it comes to having enough knowledge to discuss firearm topics. Do you know how many hoops you have to jump through and how many special permits you need to have to own a fully automatic firearm?
Forget about USING it, just to OWN it!
If you don't mind people trampling over the Constitution, why pick on the 2nd Amendment? Why not get rid of the 1st Amendment? You don't NEED the right to have free speech, do you?
Of course, what are you going to do about it? You're unarmed.
The Second Amendment is the only Amendment that exists to protect the Constitution. Every other Amendment exists solely to protect the legal residents of the United States. The Second Amendment allows for us to protect ourselves AND to protect the Constitution from being harmed by a federal government gone out of Control.
What difference does it make whether or not you feel it's "necessary"? Cars aren't necessary, cigarettes aren't necessary, TVs aren't necessary, but none of them are illegal.
By outlawing any kind of gun, you're undermining the Constitution. What makes the 2nd Amendment any less relevant than the 1st, the 3rd, the 4th, or the 6th (or any of the other Amendments, though particularly those in the Bill of Rights)? By undermining one Amendment, especially when dealing with the Bill of Rights, you open the door to doing the same thing with any of the others.
Also, who's to say we won't need to turn our guns on our own government some day? By undermining one of our Constitutional rights, you risk jeopardizing the rest. Our "rights of protection against government aggression" that you mention would no longer matter.

I'm still amazed to see people who fear a police state want to shape laws in such a way that the government is the only ones armed.....
Those who fear a corrupt government should be the ones who WANT to be armed... They rant about all the rights (though they can't name specifics) lost as being wholly evil, and as a result want to take away MORE rights from us?
That's like suggesting that you hate the cold, so you're going to move to the North Pole.
