Last September a Danish newspaper published a page of cartoons depicting Muhammad, a sin to Muslims. Just publishing such a page that attacks a religion is condemnable, but so is the reaction. Muslims have attacked and burned many Danish and Norwegian embassies across the Middle East. By this violence the Muslims perpetuate the very stereotype that these cartoons make fun of. These protest along with the riots in France have cause myself to lose some respect for the Muslim people and their religion.

I'm with you. Whoever said it is a religion of peace should open their eyes now.
Do you see masses of Christians acting like this, even when our people are killed?
Just draw a picture, and it gives this faith an excuse to be violent. Aren't they just a scary bunch? (sarcasm)
Yes, Christians did the same horrible things a few hundred years ago for the same principles. It was called the Crusades and Christians from all over Europe marched across the continent to fight for God. They were even promised absolute forgiveness for everything past, present, and future for participating in and fighting "for God."
Secondly, I want to address supercoolyellow.
The depictions are more than just sin in Islam. It specifically forbids the use of pictures for fear of idolotry (something that occured with the Isrealites in Christianity). And you must realize that the feelings many Muslims experience and act upon over these cartoons comes from a place with no rationality. It is an emotional response of being wronged, having the most important thing in their life mocked. I don't think the Danish paper broke any laws or wrongly printed the cartoons, yet they had to have known what such a publication would inspire among Muslims.
Now, I don't condone any of the violence happening in reference to these cartoons, but when a people are so emotionally charged about a certain ideal it is not in your best interest to poke fun at it. At this point, someone has to back down. Muslims already feel rejected in world society and I understand freedom of the press. Do we really want to start more wars over this? I think the publications should apoligize and smile through their teeth. Apeasing a people is better than fighting them over something neither of you will never agree on.
A few hundred years ago, everyone was a barbarian.
I was referring to recent history.
EXCELLENT POINT PAULA
I don't believe that one picture should condone the killings of many because the people feel that there god was made fun of. Muslums for hundreds of years have made fun of Jesus Christ and Chritianity and we don't go and kill the mothers and daughters and small children. I think these people are just looking for an excuse to act out violent agressions from not being able to be born in a Democratic Society and enjoy the freedom we enjoy. They need to grow up and look at the world as a whole and it's not just them living in it, it's all of us.
PS. I'm not religious!!!!!!!!
I'm really tiring of hearing, "well, i believe in freedom of speech, but..."
There is no but...either you have it or you don't. does it matter if governments are offended by it's media, does it matter that christians are lampooned all over the world, and sometimes rightly so: but protest in ways other than killing.
The calls to the bbc by muslims have really exposed how broad the extremist element is there. And by the way, is it so different the way jews are depicted in palestinian cartoons, and are innocent people, simply affiliated with christian countries, being beheaded live not at least equally offensive
if a cartoon is all it takes to draw these people to killing, then what level of apeasement will end this conflict. Maybe if we all became muslim there would be peace everywhere. Perhaps if we made our women stay out of public, cover there entire bodies heads faces, stopped issueing them licenses.
Then we could restrict our media from objective reporting of only countries and people that don't televise live beheadings. and certainly no criticism of clerics who use religious beliefs as a way to cajole children into committing suicide to usurp power. that what you're lookin' for jackie.
and if we want to drag out the last millenium of atrocities who would be left without blood on their hands. Except they dont have any hands seeing as they were dead and decayed long before any of us were born.
A few hundred years ago is recent history. And not everyone was a barbarian then. We can't ignore something because it isn't recent enough.
Besides, Islam is a religion of peace, so is Christianity, and most religions that exist. Just because extremists are forcing our attention towards them doesn't make Muslims support violence.
And I believe our president is Christian, yet he supports violence and torture. What's the difference?!?
Ever heard of "an eye for an eye?" Why don't all the pissed off Muslims just draw their own cartoons?
How many of the 700,000 angry ranting death-threatening Muslims are the extremists?
10, 20? I don't think so.
An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.
Plus, didn't Jesus tell us to "turn the other cheek" as well? Is that doctrine less important.
And Muslims are drawing their own cartoons. There was an Iranian newspaper calling for Holocoust cartoons to "see how it made the Westerners feel."
I beleive an eye for an eye. Whenever something bad happened. It is the American fault. It is "dead to American". WTF. Have they ever thought all good things we ever done. Pakistan earth quake, which country was spearhead in helping, but then "dead to American". You know what we should do? We just let them muslim help each other. F.. them all. let them kill each other and just not give a though about it. I beleive in an iron fist. They kill one American then we should wipe out their entire village. This is the only way that they will ever mind their own business.
Obviously they have never heard that phrase, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words (and cartoons) will never hurt me."
The Muslim rioters are not doign the right thing, but Americans don't seem to understand the gravity of this issue. Just a positive drawing of Muhammed is sacreligious, not even mentioning a drawing of him associated with terrorism. And I do not lose respect for the Muslim religion. It's the extremists who are rioting; not every Muslim person.
I'm not understanding why the Muslim community does not want Muhammed drawn in association with terrorism if they are the one calling for Jihad in the name of Muhammed. I do not understand why it is okay to kill in his name yet not associate him with the killings. Is this not what the Christians and the Catholics all did in the name of religion. Muslims should just accept it asall the other religions have come to accept the wrong-doing of our for-fathers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can't generalize and put every Muslim in the same group. THere are millions of Muslims who have nothing to do with terrorism. Yea, some extremists used his name as the reason for their actions, but that still doesn't make the Danish paper correct for publishing those pictures. Why punish every Muslim for the faults of a few?
It has nothing to do with the connection to terrorism. It is a strick belief in Islam that there will be NO drawings of Mohammad!! No happy ones, no sad ones, no indifferent ones, none! The fact that the cartoons mocks Mohammad only adds to the anger and frustration.
