Waking up in the morning, I look at myself in the mirror. My face stares back. Its unmade up, genuine, round-shapely goodness with a crow’s nest sitting on top. This is me. After a good long gaze, I reach for the brush, comb out all the tangles. I reach for the faucet, run my face clean. I reach for the eyeliner, cover up my eyes. When I finally glance back up again, I always ask myself, “Who’s this person staring back at me?”
Why do we smear our faces to emanate a fake beauty?
Why are we so insecure about our true selves?
Why do people prefer fake?
Wouldn’t it be easier if you could wake up in the morning and not have to freak because of one hair that’s out of place?
Why put on a mask?
Why waste so much money on cosmetics?
Why not like ourselves the way we are?
Why do we feel so unprotected?
Why can’t people show who they are without getting criticized?
These questions run through my head. It’s not like I don’t do the same thing. I fret. I freak. I judge. I pretend… but why? I think my reason is so that I can gain just a little extra boost of self esteem. That’s just a tad bit selfish on my part, but don’t even dare say you don’t do it.

we are all subjected to the image of beautiful and what girls and guys like.
apparently big buff guys with veins popping out and a perfect complexion is the ideal for guys.
but whatever, i would like to meet who came up with these ideas. i guess it could be the corporations such as clothing stores who conjured up ideas. but we have jsut grown so accustomed to hiding ourselves that it's second nature.

And you'll REALLY wonder why we do it! Check this out:

There's a link to a site (I can't remember the name of it right now, but it's in the blog) that has tested thousands of cosmetics for biotoxins and carcinogens, and has investigated the labor and conservation practices of the companies. There are very few companies that produce safe products. Did you know that none of the makeup made by major cosmetics companies is legal in Europe? They know it's poison. They have laws against it. Read the blog for more information..

I don't... The most I do in the morning is brush my hair (not necessarily to look good, but I run my hands through my hair a lot during the day and it doesn't work so well if I have tangles all in it), brush my teeth (for hygiene), and put on some tinted moisturizer (again... for health. It has SPF in it, and keeps my skin a little less dry in the impossibly dry climate I live in).
For special occasions I'll put on makeup and stuff, but it's enhancing the features I already have, not really covering anything up...

But the thing is ... even you're saying that it's for health ... In other words, to have something better
Still makeup ... it covers what's really there even if covering is for enhancing
Makeup covers skin ...
Yeah... just like I eat to 'have something better'...
If you're going to say that doing something for health is the same as doing something to cover up a flaw, then you should be just as down on those who get surgery for health reasons (like a breast tumor, or getting the colon removed if you have colon cancer, or getting a brain tumor removed, or sewing up a hole in your heart) as those who get plastic surgery for purely aesthetic reasons. It doesn't match up.
Also, brushing your teeth and combing your hair for health reasons is not an attempt to get something better... it's an attempt to keep what you have the same, so it doesn't get worse.
As for your 'makeup covers skin' comment... clothes cover skin as well, and my glasses, which I need to see properly, cover up my eyes. Do you suggest we all go walking around naked without glasses, fumbling around and often unable to go anywhere in order to not 'cover up ourselves'?

Surgery for medical problems is someone's attempt to FIX what is WRONG. Nobody wants a slab of flesh hanging off of their sides, so they try to fix it and "cover" the problem by removing it. No, I don't suggest we run around naked. You say we don't do it to "cover." Then, what do you dress yourself for? Clothes cover what you don't want other people to see, unless you're a slut. Then, you can stroll around in the nude strutting your stuff. But, I doubt even the common prostitute would do that. Plus, you'd probably be arrested. Combing your hair is definitely for one NOT for health reasons. You could go through life with bedhead and tangles and live perfectly well and happy. Brushing your teeth. You don't want blackened cavities to run loose in your mouth. What you want is a COVERING of protection for your teeth. Not like you want people to see black craters surrounded by yellow scum for what you know as "teeth." Eating. You eat to COVER your bones with meat. Still here with my covering. You don't understand my meaning. My interpretation of "covering" is extremely, extremely, really literal. B****ing me out before you even get my meaning is very stupid. Misunderstandings start wars. Long, endless wars where you're left with a jumble of messy goodness. Seeing as how my post was so short, written when I was so tired and so confused with life (which you wouldn't know), it's obviously not much to base a judgement off of. I'm sorry you don't like it. I'm sorry you disagree. But, please, next time, don't make it sound so ... mean? I'm perfectly fine with you sharing your opinions with the world. Life lesson. Don't judge without knowledge. I probably sound like a ... mean old hag? But you sounded angry, so I got angry too? That's just me. Okay, I think I'm done ... =]
Ok, so surgery is fixing something that's gone wrong... brushing your teeth and putting on sunscreen is designed to prevent it from going wrong in the first place. It's not a way to hide flaws... it's to live a healthy life so that you can enjoy it.
You're criticizing people for 'covering' themselves in your original blog, but the only reason you claim is so that people can hide their flaws. It's not all about that, despite what you may think.
And yes, combing your hair does have health implications. If you don't brush your hair, or wash it, it can become a nest for all sorts of different things. If you don't brush your teeth, they could rot and fall out, which would make it rather difficult to eat properly. If you don't put sunscreen on, your skin may burn (mine does), and the more often you go out in the sun without sunscreen, the better chance you have at getting melanoma and other skin cancers. Melanoma can be deadly.
I wasn't judging you... I just don't agree with your opinions about why people do things. And your reason for people eating isn't a very good one. People eat to make energy so that they can actually function... it's not a matter about covering your bones (which makes little sense anyway, because your muscles, ligaments, skin, and innards won't disappear if you don't eat... you'll die long before that happens).

Okay you wanna talk my original blog? Let's talk my original blog. I was writing about how after I put on makeup, I wonder who I am. That's what I was talking about. I was wondering why people do it still. Everybody judges. You can't say you don't. That is what I was talking about. Now, THAT is my original blog. There was no CRITICIZING of any sort. I said I did it. I asked why. Where is the criticism in the why?? Where is the criticism in saying everyone judges. It's impossible not to judge. That is definitely a fact.
even people who wear dreads, which basically means they stopped combing their hair, have to take measures to make sure they don't develop severe dermatitis and that theirs scalps don't crust over with a dandruff cake.
I had the pleasure of cutting someone's hair who stopped taking care of her hair (she was homeless, and suffered from schizophrenia) I cannot even describe the smell. I had to chisel off a three quarter of an inch thick white crust from her entire scalp. I have no idea what the long term health implications are for such a condition, but it was very unpleasant.
If you like this post, please tip me. All tips will be forwarded to ProgressiveU.org. Keep the site alive!
I've seen people with skin like that all along their bodies. To the point where we have to blindly stick them because we can't feel through their skin. I honestly don't know how you can let your skin get that bad....
